Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

*If you have found your zone already, it will be highlighted in the table below.

Flowers aren't the only plant that can make your landscape turn heads. The Thunderhead Japanese Black Pine (Pinus thunbergii 'Thunderhead') will make an astonishing focal point in your garden!

The upright dense growth and neatly arranged needles that fill the branching of this Black Pine variety have been beloved for centuries for their impressive growth. Often trained into Bonsai, Japanese Black Pine thrives in some harsh conditions and even coastal environments with ease.

The dark bark is gray as the tree forms spreading canopies at maturity, growing into a smaller 8-10 foot tall and 12-15 foot wide large shrub or small tree with pruning and training. Growing best in USDA hardiness zones 6 to 9, these trees produce small pine cones that birds seek out for food.

Planting and Application:

Because of the Black Pines' resistance to urban environments, pollution, and salt, it is a popular lawn and landscaping tree. In Japan, Thunderhead is widely used as a dramatic garden specimen in a Rock Garden, and your meditation garden will benefit from a calming steady evergreen presence. Front or backyard in the sun, use Thunderhead as a focal point in a destination garden, or formal garden accent on a raised berm.

A stellar privacy screen, the dense bottlebrush needles provide sound dampening, slow wind, and screen out prying eyes without overtaking your yard! Surround seating areas and patios with unique year-round greenery and form without the work.

This unorthodox, compact evergreen will show its dark green foliage all year round. Then in the winter season, you can expect its silvery white candles to shine brightly among the powdery snow surrounding it. Go ahead and plant one as a Street tree, or to soften the corners of your home's foundation.

  • Bold & Dramatic Dark Green Presence
  • Dark Green Needles & Silvery White Candles
  • Showy & Unusual Shape & Form
  • Wider Than Tall Canopy - Great Screening & Hedges
  • Impressive Specimen & Year-Round Focal Point

#ProPlantTips for Care:

No need to worry about the quality of soil or too much sun! The Thunderhead Japanese Black Pine flourishes when growing in acidic, well-drained soil and full sun exposure but can handle some dappled shade of the understory. For the first few seasons, watering it regularly will establish a root system that will give the tree a sturdy base. After this maintenance won't be on your mind very often. After it is established, this tree will become rather drought-tolerant. Provide consistent water in the fall and during the winter months if it is dry or these shrubs are exposed to drying icy northern winds. All plants appreciate Nature Hills Root Booster and a 3-4 inch layer of arborist bark chips to support their growth.

  • Full Sun & Partial Sun
  • Well-Drained, Acidic Soil Tolerant
  • Drought-Tolerant Once Established
  • Candle Prune In Early Spring
  • Deer & Rabbit Resistant
  • Easy Maintenance
