The Thunderbolt® Box Honeysuckle PP#26598 (Lonicera nitida 'Golden Glow') offers a gorgeous chartreuse display with many possibilities! A broadleaf evergreen with highly compact Box Honeysuckle with flashy foliage that can be either a cascading shrub with long, neatly arranged leaves or a tightly clipped, bright green low hedge!
Box Honeysuckle features creamy white flowers and small bluish-purple fruit in the fall, but the unique, orderly, tiny, oval glossy leaves are what take center stage! Arranged in neat pairs and forming mostly flattened sprays of growth, these have an elegant form when grown naturally and an incredibly compact and easy-to-maintain sheared form!
The Thunderbolt® Box Honeysuckle has a wonderful fragrance enjoyed by everyone! You will find many bees and butterflies seeking out the fragrant small, white, tubular flowers in the spring, and flocks of songbirds flitting about through your shrub searching for shelter, nesting, and gobbling up those little fruits.
This Box Honeysuckle Bush grows from 3-4 feet tall and wide. It's a great size for many possibilities! A native to China's Yunnan and west Sichuan regions, this understory shrub typically grows along streams, but does well here in USDA plant hardiness zones 5 to 9!
Planting and Application:
This Honeysuckle plant is a welcoming, bright green with a smaller leaf size and denser form than a normal Honeysuckle Bush, making it a great hedge! Perfect for areas that may not have as much sun, where a vivid shrub or sheared hedge in year-round bright green is needed to light up a dappled sun area!
A wonderful and refreshingly bright green alternative to Boxwood and Cotoneaster, Box Honeysuckles are typically used as low-growing formal hedges or as sheared individual plants! You can let them grow naturally without pruning, so it looks like a cascading groundcover!
Let Thunderbolt® spill over rocks in your Rock Garden, over the tops of retaining walls, or reflected in a pool of your Meditation or Zen garden! They'll tumble and cascade down a slope or hillside or garden edges in an elegant manner and fill the area with brilliant year-round color!
Pot Thunderbolt® into a colorful decorative pot or large planter as either a filler, spiller, or the focal point thriller - either as a sheared and trimmed topiary or cascading accent! Container gardeners relish being able to decorate their balconies, porches, patios, and even their front entry with these bright shrubs that bridge both formal and informal garden styles!
Don't forget to snip a few stems for unique greenery in your bouquets and floral arrangements!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
This plant is cold-hardy and able to handle low temperatures with no issues! Provide dappled sun, part shade, or afternoon shade for your cute Box Honeysuckle plant! They are understory plants and don't like too much sun as it stresses them. In the hottest climates, they are a bit prone to sunburn in the brunt of the summer sun.
Adaptable to most soils as long as it drains. These evergreen shrubs do best when planted in well-drained soil. If you have trouble with drainage, raise the area by 18 inches, then plant in this raised berm.
Provide a 3-4 inch deep top-dressing of arborist mulch. Mulch does many beneficial things: conserves water, and insulates the roots! Box Honeysuckle does not like extended drought and prefers regular moisture, so installing drip irrigation or soaker hoses along longer rows and throughout larger plantings helps immensely.
Pruning after flowering is the gardener's choice based on what they want. If you don't prune often, you will get a cascading look that appears as an ornamental groundcover. Instead of pruning each year, you can also renewal prune by removing the oldest,, fattest stems every 3-5 years and allowing the younger stems to take over. If the shrubs need more drastic pruning, they can simply be cut to the ground and allowed to re-grow from the roots for a fresh new look.
These shrubs bloom on last year's growth, so shear after the flowers fade. If you shear to shape, it becomes a neat, cute bush, but you will lose out on some of the fruit for birds.
- Part Shade/Sun, Dappled Sun & Afternoon Shade
- Well-Drained Organic Soil
- Moderate to Moist Soil
