Care and Maintenance

Native to Eurasia and mentioned in the Bible, Tamarisk has been a friend to humankind for millennia. This cultivar adapts from frigid Zones 2 to the temperate Zones 8, thriving in lean soils where most shrubs would falter. It’s even hardy enough to die back and return bigger and better come spring in northern climates.

As a woody deciduous shrub (or herbaceous perennial in cold zones), Summer Glow is low maintenance but high impact. It's beloved for its ability to survive in places most plants simply can't.

  • Planting Time: Early spring or fall
  • Sun Needs: Full sun (minimum 6+ hours)
  • Soil Needs: Well-drained soils; thrives in poor, alkaline, sandy, or salty soils; does not require rich soil
  • Moisture Needs: Moderate to low once established; drought tolerant. Use the Finger Test to water new plants regularly in their first year
  • Mulch/Arborist Mulch: Apply a 3–4 inch deep layer of arborist mulch around the base to retain moisture and protect roots
  • Fertilization Needs: Rarely needed; may benefit from compost in extremely poor soil
  • Pruning Info: Blooms on new wood. Prune hard in late winter or very early spring to the ground if needed. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage tidiness
  • Renewal Pruning: Every 3-5 years, use root pruning with a sharp spade to invigorate the shrub and control spread
  • Special Needs/Perks/Growing Tips:
    • Extremely cold-hardy (down to Zone 2)
    • Heat and salt tolerant
    • Handles clay, compacted, and poor soils
    • Deer and rabbit resistant

Delicate pink blooms all summer

If you live on a salt water property that will not allow other trees to thrive, summer glow Tamerix is the remedy with its whimsical blooms on delicate limbs year after year. The tree is pollinated by bumble bees on our water front area on the east coast, they love the tree and seem to care less about bothering us. Yes, it is tall, 16 to 18 ft in bloom, but each yr in the fall we trim tree down to 4 ft for winter rest. Have enjoyed this beautiful tree for past 5 yrs.....only negative is if your area is subject to high winds, make sure the roots are deep, always covered. We add more top soil each yr, after 1 yr of the tree up-rooting. In my search for other salt water tolerant beauties, the dwarf crepe myrtle bush will also with-stand any salt water intrusion. My other pink beauty that blooms year after year with little care.

Hello Helene,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your wonderful experience with the Summer Glow Tamarisk! We’re glad to hear how beautifully it has thrived along your saltwater waterfront; those delicate pink blooms paired with the bumble bee visitors truly do sound enchanting. Your detailed care tips, especially trimming it down for winter and protecting its roots against strong winds, are invaluable insights that others will surely appreciate when creating their own resilient coastal gardens.

We also appreciate you highlighting the dwarf crepe myrtle as a fellow saltwater-tolerant favorite! That’s a great suggestion for adding a splash of pink beauty that’s low-maintenance. For added root protection around tamarisks, we often recommend mulching regularly with organic material, which can help retain moisture and stabilize roots from wind stress.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you’d like advice on fertilizer timing to keep blooms vibrant next season or competing pests/mulching questions—we’re always happy to help your garden thrive through every season!

Hi Helene,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with the Summer Glow Tamarisk! We’re delighted to hear how well it thrives in your challenging saltwater environment and that it not only decorates your waterfront with its delicate pink blooms but also supports bumble bees so beautifully. Your choice to prune it down to 4 feet for winter and regularly top-dress the roots is fantastic advice—this kind of mindful care really helps the tree stay healthy and secure, especially given those strong coastal winds.

We appreciate your insight on soil coverage; ensuring stable, deep roots is key to preventing uprooting, particularly near water. Your mention of the dwarf crepe myrtle as another saltwater-tolerant delight is a wonderful tip for others looking for resilient, beautiful plants—they indeed add pops of color year after year with minimal care.

If you ever want more advice on coastal gardening or suggestions for other salt-tolerant varieties suited to your yard, we’re always here to help!
