Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Plant in a spot that receives at least six to eight hours of direct sun daily. While it can handle a little afternoon shade, you will get the most vibrant orange blooms and the best disease resistance with full sun exposure.
  • Soil: These roses love rich and well-drained soil that feels like a wrung-out sponge. If you have heavy clay, mix in some organic compost or plant in a raised mound to ensure the roots do not sit in stagnant water.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water deeply two to three times a week to help the roots dive deep into the soil. Once established, this variety is quite drought-tolerant, but consistent moisture prevents the plant from dropping its lower leaves. If the soil dries out too much during a heatwave, you might notice fewer flower clusters and smaller individual blooms.

Pruning Tips

Since these roses bloom on new wood, the best time to prune is in early spring just as the leaf buds begin to swell. Think of it like a spring haircut; cut the entire shrub back by about one-third of its height to encourage fresh, vigorous growth and a massive flush of flowers. This keeps the plant tidy and prevents the center from becoming a tangled mess of old stems.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release rose fertilizer in early spring and again in mid-summer to fuel those continuous blooming cycles. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the fall, as this encourages tender new growth that can be easily damaged by the first hard frost. Stick to a formula specifically for roses to ensure you are providing the micronutrients they need for that deep sunset color.
