The native Sugarberry Tree (Celtis laevigata) is a hardy Elm Tree relative, also well-known as the Southern Hackberry but with no worry about Dutch Elm disease! Sometimes called the Sugar Hackberry Tree, it is a fantastic wildlife and shade tree with useful nutlets in the fall that birds and humans can all enjoy.

Early spring brings insignificant green flowers that are sought-after by pollinators as they flitter among the green pointed leaves. Forming a broad, rounded, open crown of spreading or slightly drooping branches. Yellow fall color and twiggy branches make choice nesting sites for tree-dwellers. The mature gray bark develops the Hackberry's well-known warty texture that shows off in the winter.

The berry-like drupes appear in early fall and offer sweet and nutritious reddish-brown fruit for birds and humans alike! The abundant fleshy berry-like drupes mature to deep purple and are edible, sweet, and can be ground into a paste.

Bake them into cereal, ground as spice, and have a history of medicinal uses as well. Snack on the date-like fruit that is high in calcium, a good source of protein, and phosphorus as well as a high amount of fat and fiber!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Sugarberry Trees do best in growing zones 6-9 and grow to towering 60-80 feet in height and width at maturity. Highly adaptable to most well-drained soils in full sun, these deciduous trees can even tolerate some partial shade in the forest understory, at least until they've outgrown and outlived their neighbors! Once established, Sugarberry tolerates dry and rocky soil, occasionally soggy soil, and urban pollution. Prune these trees in the late winter or early spring to get them off on the right start. All plants appreciate a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch around their roots to insulate the roots.
