If you are searching for a wonderful specimen tree to highlight your landscape, why not use one of the top-rated varieties? No need to second guess yourself. This white-flowering variety is a plantsman’s favorite, for good reason. Sugar Tyme Flowering Crabapple (Malus ‘Sutyzam’) has it all, from beauty to adaptability and disease resistance.

You’ll thrill to the springtime show. Delightful, petite, pink-hued buds swell and grow along the bare branches. Be on the lookout for them as a sure sign that warmer weather is on its way. These buds open into a wave of stunning white blossoms.

Sweetly fragrant blooms feature a bright yellow stamen in the center. Masses of these flowers are held profusely all along every branch. They last over a long period of time. Butterflies love these sweet, single petals. You can imagine they think of them as a flowering landing pad for nectar!

In summer, you’ll enjoy lush, dark green leaves. Be sure to notice the tiny new green fruits that start to develop. The fruit becomes an important decorative accent that adds to the beauty of this wonderful Flowering Crabapple selection.

Once summer starts to fade, the leaves turn from their rich, green summer foliage into a pretty golden-yellow before leaf drop. The green fruit also starts to brighten up into a bold red, a brilliant contrast for your late summer and early fall football watch parties.

The branch structure itself is quite attractive. You’ll love how the bright red berries hang like natural Christmas lights strung throughout the tree on the bare branches of winter.

Continually recommended by Universities and landscape architects, Sugar Tyme has become a valuable specimen tree with superior ornamental features. Michigan Growers Choice award in 1999 as well as being recognized by noted professor and author Michael Dirr as a top selection for the home garden.

Local songbirds also would like to cast their vote in favor of the Sugar Tyme. They’ll surely appreciate the easy nutrition as they prepare for winter. Migrating birds coming back in late winter will pick the rest of the tree clean.

This variety is in high demand. Order yours today!

How to Use Sugar Tyme Crabapple in the Landscape

Sugar Tyme Crabapple is a deciduous tree with slender, dark green leaves for a full, vibrant appearance. The foliage color is a golden red in the fall and looks fabulous with the bright red fruit contrasted next to it.

Plant your tree where you’ll see it from many different vantage points to get the biggest bang for your buck. For instance, use it near the patio where you’ll also see it from the kitchen window.

Or, use an informal group of them to decorate a berm planting in the front yard. You’ll enjoy looking at the transition from your picture window.

Plant a row of them on the sunny side of taller evergreen trees to soften the look. Or, use a series along the back of your mixed garden border as a special backdrop.

Sugar Tyme Crabapple puts on quite a display when planted in groups of 3 to 5 to create a small grove effect. Plant them at 10 to 12 feet on center, measuring from the center of one to the center of the next.

#ProPlantTips for Care

A vigorous tree, Sugar Tyme is noted for its exceptional resistance to apple scab, leaf spot, powdery mildew, and fire blight. It is even tolerant of a wide range of soil conditions, climates, and even urban pollution.

This is a low-maintenance tree. It has been used to great effect in key spots on commercial properties.

But it's always a good idea to give this tree a spot in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. You'll also want to ensure that the site you choose has good air circulation for best results.

Plant Sugar Tyme Crabapple in a location that drains well as this tree does not like wet roots. Adapted to a wide range of soil types the tree does like the pH to be slightly acidic from 6.0 to 6.5.

In soils with higher pH, this can be corrected with applications of an acid fertilizer like Dr. Earth Acid Lovers Natural and Organic Premium Fertilizer.

Prune this tree only if you see a broken branch. It really requires little pruning to achieve its overall shape.

Give a moderate amount of water on a regular basis. Once established, it shows a little drought tolerance, but why not protect your investment with a routine schedule of consistent water?

Sugar Tyme is the ideal flowering Crabapple tree for any size garden. This could be the perfect housewarming present. You’ll be so excited to make it a part of the garden, order today!

I ordered four 4ft trees, and they arrived in great shape. I thought the plants had a nice amount of root although I am always amazed how much root is cut when transplanting a barefoot tree! I will be anxious to see how the trees leaf out and an excited with my purchase so far.

Dear Sheri B.,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful feedback! We’re delighted to hear that your four 4ft trees arrived safely and that you’re pleased with the packaging and root condition. You’re absolutely right—bare-root trees do have a significant portion of their roots trimmed during transplanting, but this careful pruning helps the tree focus its energy on establishing strong new growth in its new home.

We’re just as excited as you to see how your trees leaf out and thrive in your garden. To give them the best start, be sure to keep the roots moist until planting, avoid potting the root ball deeply, and provide ample water and nourishment as they settle in. If you ever need tips on watering schedules or seasonal care tricks, our Plant Library on NatureHills.com offers detailed resources.

We truly appreciate your trust in Nature Hills for your gardening journey and are here to assist every step of the way!
