Our Hearts are a-busting with the fantastic native Strawberry Bush (Euonymus americanus) now available at NatureHills.com! Also called Hearts A'busting and Hearts-a-Bustin, any way you say it - it's a very showy ornamental shrub! Related to the well-known Burning Bush, Strawberry bushes are covered in similar green leaves that turn fiery red in fall and have fine-textured slender branches - but they have an added perk that sets them apart!
Spring brings loads of fuzzy-looking balls of greenish blooms that pollinators seek out. While they're not the showiest among the dense branching, it's their fall color and berries that are the highlight of these native bushes! Those fuzzy blooms become fire-reddish-purple spiky capsules that burst open to reveal darker interiors and expose the large orangy-red seeds! Bustin indeed!
Hearts-a-Bustin is a suckering plant that politely forms its own thickets for slow and steady spreading coverage and bird-friendly habitat and nesting! Plus those seeds feed songbirds and small mammals! Growing to a space-saving 4-6 feet high and wide at maturity, This rounded shrub creates a lovely display in gardens throughout USDA hardiness zones 6 through 9.
Planting and Application:
Strawberry Bushes are perfect for naturalizing and woodland locations, transforming large areas that tend to be tricky for other plants to grow in. Clay soils, drought-prone locations, wet to dry areas throughout a wide range of conditions around the US in growing zones ? ?. Natives like this easy-going shrub are perfect for Rain and Water gardens, Rock gardens, Fire-wise landscaping, as well as slopes and for erosion control.
For creating a low-maintenance landscape, these plants can easily replace the traditional Burning Bush in areas where those can be a nuisance. Use as specimen plantings, accents, backdrops for garden beds and borders, and as wonderful anchors in the landscape. The fruit resembles a spiky strawberry and calls birds and the blooms attract pollinators.
