Oh, the joys of native Serviceberry are many! This is truly a "four-season" plant that thrives from coast to coast and north to south. No wonder modern plant breeders are working hard to bring outstanding new cultivars to market!
First Editions® Standing Ovation™ Serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia 'Obelisk') is a hard-working erect variety! Standing Ovation™ - like all Serviceberries - starts the spring with a massive display of delicate white flowers that rivals the Dogwoods for showiness! These nectar-rich blooms entice butterflies like no other and arrive on the scene early and before the leaves appear!
In June, look for a small harvest of delicious edible berries that taste like blueberries and almonds. They can be eaten fresh in moderation, made into preserves, dried like raisins, baked into muffins, pressed for juice or wine, or simply left for the grateful songbirds in your area!
Valuable Standing Ovation™ Serviceberry features a columnar, near-vertical (called fastigiate) branch structure. With a beautiful, graceful form, Standing Ovation™ grows into an almost perfect oval! Attractive bark and forest green, circular leaves look great all season. Then in the fall, the round leaves change to red and orange lighting up your landscape in classic autumn colors.
A truly adaptable plant, this native hybrid thrives in just about any well-drained soil. Cherish the opportunity to grow this outstanding urban-tolerant selection, expertly grown by our flowering shrub team for gardens throughout USDA hardiness zones 2 through 8!
Planting and Application:
This shrub becomes a marvelously sharp specimen plant! Consider a single Standing Ovation™ Serviceberry as a small tree to decorate a courtyard. It will never outgrow the space. If planted strategically, it will even cast pleasant shade on your outdoor seating area. It can even be used as an accent tree for small-space gardens.
But their beauty is magnified when groupings and rows make an eye-catching hedge or windbreak! The 15-foot tall height soars high above a typical chain link fence, but stays tight and compact width-wise - growing only 4 feet in spread.
Standing Ovation™ is an excellent option for hedging and privacy. Standing Ovation™ Serviceberry should be planted 30 inches on center for a solid screen, measuring from the center of one to the center of the next. It will fill in and the canopies will touch.
Because this plant does produce edible berries, why not add it as a backdrop to a Victory Garden? The flowers bring many beneficial pollinators, and you'll create a more formal structure to this hard-working space.
Protect your cherry harvest with this old farmer's trick! - If you grow Cherry trees or Bush Cherries, plant a few Standing Ovation™ Serviceberries nearby. Both ripen at the same time, and you'll attract birds that prefer the Serviceberries better!
Partner with a smaller row of Aronia Chokeberry shrubs in a mixed shrub border. Use Standing Ovation™ to refine an Elderberry stand, or try them as an effective backdrop in Butterfly Gardens while attracting pest-eating beneficial insects galore!
They are shapely enough for use as anchors in your foundation planting. Or add a matched pair flanking either side of your front door, or anchor the corner of your bungalow. In a twist, why not use this plant as a very stylish hedging plant? Look for opportunities to boost your food security with this ornamental element of Edible Landscaping.
You can even keep these plants in oversized outdoor containers for many years, as they are tougher than they look. Create an exceptional display with a series of these extraordinarily cold-hardy shrubs along the railing of your balcony!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
For best results, plant them in full sun where they get at least six hours of sunlight a day. You'll have the best fruiting and fall color with more sun! Native Serviceberry bushes are a widely adaptable species that can be found in nearly every state For landscape use, give Standing Ovation™ well-drained soil and apply a moderate amount of water on a regular basis.
We highly recommend the use of Nature Hills Root Booster during planting to create a symbiotic relationship with tiny feeder roots that never "wears out". Top-dress your planting site with a 3-4 inch thick layer of arborist mulch to hold in moisture and insulate the roots from the cold winters.
Wait to Prune until after the flowers are done. Use a light hand while pruning, and develop a plan before you get started for best results. You can renewal prune to maintain vigor by removing the oldest, fattest stems and least productive older branches out at the base of the plant. Remove no more than a third of the plant at a time every 3-5 years.
