A fountain of flowers in the spring, the Bridalwreath Spirea (Spiraea prunifolia) never fails to draw comments from passers-by! Talk about a showstopper! Every year around April your Bridal Wreath (as it's sometimes called) covers its arching branches with double-petalled white blooms, transforming bare branches into steams of white flowers! Once the flowers are gone, the plant covers itself in blue-green leaves until fall, when the leaves turn yellow, orange, and purple. Even when it drops its leaves for the winter, the elegantly arched branches stand out in your landscape.
That attention-getting look, coupled with the fact that this plant is a breeze to grow, has made this variety of Spiraea a favorite in American gardens for over a century. In some rural parts of the country, you can still come across fields where the houses that stood there are long gone, but their Bridalwreath Spiraea is still growing and blooming every year!
Thriving in USDA hardiness zones 4 through 7, these are cold-hardy plants and highly adaptable spring-flowering ornamental! Pollinators adore these blooms and you'll enjoy the steady green foliage as a backdrop and screening plant for the rest of the growing season. These informal, and airy Spirea form dense, rounded and vase-shaped shrubs with arching branches. It will grow 5-9 feet in height with a 6-8 foot mature spread.
Planting and Application:
Besides Bridalwreath making a great single specimen plant, it will shine in your perennial and pollinator border or take your breath away as a tall, property-defining hedge. Plant a row or specimen in your front yard where friends and neighbors will be sure to pause to take in its spring majesty! The arching form of these lovely plants begs for use in a modern and informal landscapes alike. Gently curve that row as you like to follow the contours of your landscape as a magnificent hedge, windbreak and shelterbelt for wildlife.
These romantic shrubs look fantastic as a single specimen at the corner of your foundation to anchor a planting. Give it some elbow room and allow it to spread out for the best results! When out of bloom, Bridalwreath Spirae is a large shrub with a clean delicate look. This is a taller selection best used as a border plant, privacy hedge or to add a bold texture to the background of the garden or the outside perimeter of a sunny woodland garden or Moon Garden.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Spirea is truly a low-maintenance shrub with no problems! It requires full sun and makes do with average soil. It can be left to grow naturally but is happy to have some pruning if you prefer. Plant in a location with moderate moisture and a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch chips. Prune or deadhead your shrub immediately after it has finished flowering, shearing into shape or simply removing spent blooms to clean up these arching, graceful mounded shrubs!
- Full Sun
- Moderate Moisture & Appreciates Mulched Beds
- Almost Any Well-Drained Soil Type
- Prune/Shear Immediately After Flowering
- Very Cold Hardy & Low-Maintenance
