Want something gothic and Victorian-looking in your garden? Add some ruffles and black velvet with the Sorbonne Tall Bearded Iris (Iris germanica 'Sorbonne')! This is one of the most breathtaking Iris varieties we've ever seen! This award-winning Iris takes its name from the renowned and complex architecture as well as the sophisticated and historical prestige of the Sorbonne building in Paris.

This Iris is a collector's delight! Its coloration is ineffably beautiful. It has deep red standards that are so near-black that they look like charcoal, and its falls are equally as alluring! They have beaming yellow and white dappled blazes with deep brown-to-black margins and accents. The Sorbonne Iris is truly a specimen of Irises. And its bubble shape, velvety texture, and generous ruffles only amplify its ravishing nature.

The Sorbonne Bearded Iris even has notable beards - brown with the slightest white tips. Pollinators and Hummingbirds will be enthralled and your floral bouquets become something divine! The upright sword-shaped foliage adds vertical texture to your landscape long after the flowers fade! Forming clumps 12 - 18 inches wide, while the strong stems hold these Tall Bearded Iris aloft up to 38 inches high.

Planting and Application:

It's acceptable to admit that you gasped a little when you saw this one! Sorbonne is sure to take your breath away visually and literally, especially when you get a whiff of its sweet scent!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

For best performance, Sorbonne Irises require full sun or partial sun and quick-draining soil. Soggy soil is a death sentence, but moderate, regular moisture access - especially during their first year in the ground or after transplanting - will keep these Iris healthy. All plants appreciate 3-4 inches of arborist mulch around their root systems, and Bearded Iris are actually drought tolerant once established!

Divide every few years and it's recommended you deadhead after the flowers fade. Trim all the foliage back in the autumn once it yellows, and cover the rhizomes loosely with compost, mulch, or evergreen boughs for the winter throughout USDA planting zones 3-9. Deer, Rabbits, and Squirrels seldom eat these perennials or their rhizomes.

Information About Bare Root Iris

Bare root Iris are shipped as nice fresh-cut divisions with two to three fans of green tops. Keep in mind each Iris variety can have slightly different-sized roots.

Be sure to set your Sorbonne Iris up for success by planting it in the fall in a shallow hole with a hill of soil at its center. Place the rhizome on the hill and bury it with enough soil to leave the top of the rhizome exposed. Note, that it's best to cover the rhizome with a thin layer of mulch or leaves to protect it during the coldest months but make sure to uncover it in the spring.

  • Full Sun & Some Shade
  • Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate to Low Moisture Needs
  • Deadhead In Spring & Prune Back After Foliage Yellows
  • Deer, Rabbit & Squirrel Seldom Bother These Perennials
  • Easy Care & Low Maintenance

This photogenic and dramatic Iris can only be described as "amazing" and is sure to put you under a spell. If you love Irises that speak for themselves, the Sorbonne Tall Bearded Iris is waiting for you. Order now at NatureHills.com!
