Smokebush are tough and tolerant shrubs, requiring well-drained soil, and Velvet Cloak Smokebush thrives in part to full sun! The leaves are greener in shade but burgundy in full sun. It tolerates considerable drought once it is established. With minimal pruning, it will naturally form a large shrub or small tree over time. If pruned to 6 to 8 inches tall in winter, it will produce long stems with striking, over-sized foliage.

These deciduous shrubs prefer good air circulation is another important consideration. Please don't plant too close to buildings, fences, or walls. Allow this shrub to reach its full glory and prune, trim or train them in the early spring only. Apply a 3-inch layer of wood chip mulch around the plant to keep the root system cool and moist.
