Hardy, tolerant, and tough combined with grace, beauty and four seasons of color? Siberian Dogwood is a wonderful addition to your landscape for so many reasons! Siberian Dogwood (Cornus alba 'Sibirica') is a fast-growing, multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub that is native to most of Asia. A substantial-sized shrub, these will make quite the impact on your landscape, Dogwood grows in upright, clump-forming clusters and fills an area with color year-round!

Early spring brings lovely green foliage and buttery yellow to creamy yellowish-white flowers that are small and insignificant, but appear in flat-topped clusters all over the plant! Butterflies and pollinators will find them even if you do not notice their presence!

Showy, oval leaves are bright yellow in full sun, but take on a more greenish-yellow in part shade. Flowers give way to clusters of bluish-white berries which ripen in mid-summer. Showy and irresistible to local songbirds! Between the flowers and berries, your Dogwood will be fluttering most of the growing season!

Fall brings a purple-red cast to your foliage for another season of color and just when you think the show has finished, Siberian Dogwood is most well known for the brilliant coral-red stems in winter. The red stems are most striking on sunny days with snow on the ground for a vibrant display.

So much color on one shrub!

Planting and Application:

Siberian Dogwood is amazing as an informal screening hedge and is lovely as backdrops to your garden beds to highlight your perennials and shade your smaller shrubs. The upright growth habit is perfectly suited for urban, country, formal and informal style gardens!

Preferring moist conditions, Dogwood also thrives in soggy soil and other trouble areas. Even tolerating occasional standing water! Use this trait to its fullest by using Siberian Dogwood in rain gardens and the low spots of your landscape. Plant around ponds and at the corner of the house where your gutters drain.

Best in groups or massed to highlight the lovely foliage, and in winter really stand out with their showy red stems! Able to thrive in tough conditions, the spreading habit of these shrubs makes them perfect on slopes and able to stop erosion when planted en masse. This wonderful, mid-sized shrub can even tolerate soil that stays wet on occasion. Place them at the outer edges of a Rain Garden for an excellent ornamental display.

The hardy nature of Dogwood makes them perfect in woodland and naturalistic plantings in moist soils where plants are allowed to spread and form thickets. Wildlife will enjoy the habitat you provide for them as windbreaks and shelterbelts!

Your property line will gleam with a row of these lovelies as a privacy screen. Be sure to plant Dogwood as accents in areas where you can best show off their key ornamental features. For an interesting bi-color winter stem display, combine it with a contrasting stem color like Yellow Twig Dogwood.

  • Lovely Green Leaves & Four-Season Interest
  • Pollinator Friendly Yellowish-White Flowers
  • Berries for Birds
  • Dramatic Purple-Red Fall Color
  • Award-Winning Dogwood Variety!
  • Erosion Control, Hedges, Four Season Color & Accents!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Incredibly cold hardy in USDA zones 3 and up, these easy-going, shrubs are also highly rabbit and deer resistant. Siberian Dogwood shines in both full sun and part shade. Loving organically rich soils with ample moisture, they do as well in well-draining, perfect garden soil as they do in tough conditions like soggy, dry, and even poor soils. Once established, they do wonderfully regardless of what mother nature throws their way! Established shrubs will even tolerate dry conditions and deficient soils, as well as occasional standing water. Mulch with a layer of arborist bark chips 3 to 4 inches deep to 3 feet outside of the canopy to ensure the root stays cool in the hot summer.

Pruning can be done while dormant to control size and shape. Naturally wanting to increase in size by suckers, you can control spread by trimming roots with a spade to remove root suckers if their spread is not wanted or needs maintaining. Since the color of the stems is best on younger stems, you can either prune to the ground in late winter to renewal pruning near the ground or just remove the older stems every few years.

  • Widely Adaptable in Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Thrives in Both Wet or Dry Conditions
  • Tolerant of a Wide Range of Well-Drained Soil Types
  • Prune/Renewal Prune Late Winter
  • Rabbit & Deer Resistant

Resilience, hardiness and so much to offer year-round, you won't go wrong with Siberian Dogwood for any place in your landscape! You'll be sure to find the perfect spot to enjoy one of these amazing shrubs everywhere! Call to order yours from Nature Hills today!
