How to Use Shiranui Mandarin in the Landscape

Add a single Shiranui Mandarin to your yard as a captivating specimen. We guarantee you'll be back, wanting another one for a larger harvest of these delectable goodies! Plant one in a raised garden berm in your front yard so everyone driving by will be drooling at the sight of the juicy orange orbs hanging heavily from the limbs!

#ProPlantTips for Care

Give Shiranui Mandarin full sun, favoring the morning sun to dry the leaves of dew. It needs at minimum six hours of direct sunlight a day; the more the merrier. Well-drained soil is also important. If you have soggy soil, raise your planting bed by mounding up extra soil 18 inches high by three feet wide. Plant in that mound to improve drainage.

Next, spread a three-inch layer over the root system. Be sure to pull it six inches away from the trunk for good air circulation. You'll enjoy the best crop with a medium amount of water given on a regular schedule during fruit development. Regular yet minimal watering is especially important for container-grown plants. Keep container-grown plants on the dry side in winter. Allowing in-ground and potted Citrus to dry out between waterings to avoid any lingering fogginess.

Protecting Citrus From Chill

Although Citrus can grow year-round in warmer regions (zones 9 and 10), they can also thrive in colder areas (zones 4 to 7) as long as the tree is brought indoors before the first frost of winter.

In zone 8, you can cover your tree in the event of a cold snap or unexpected overnight freeze. Citrus will need to be planted in a sheltered spot to avoid the worst of the chill, and not planted in a low area that collects cold air. If a spot like that is unavailable, or you are in a chill-prone climate, then you are safer planting Citrus Trees in a large, deep container with wheels to easily move them to a protected location or indoors when needed.

In cold growing zones, begin slowly acclimating your tree indoors in the fall, or into a protected location, eventually moving your tree inside. Indoor plants need a bright indirect sun window, greenhouse, sunroom, or enclosed patio for the winter. In spring, reverse this process and begin acclimating your tree to again be back out in the full sun all summer. This reduces stress and leaf drop.

Prune in late winter to open the interior canopy for sunlight and good air circulation. Thin these large fruits to one piece per six inches to allow for full-size mature fruit. Apply organic Citrus fertilizer during the growing season, following directions.

After harvest, consider storing the whole fruit first in the crisper drawer of your fridge to allow the natural fruit sugars to fully develop. We know it's hard...but your patience will be worth the wait!
