Tiered and stacked limbs that are absolutely full of lacecap flowers every spring, the Shasta Doublefile Viburnum (Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum 'Shasta') is a gorgeous flowering shrub with a spring flush of bloom that sits atop each branch! Loaded with a double row of flat-topped clusters of snow white lacecap flowers. The two-inch clusters line each branch to completely cover the shrub from top to bottom!
Well-arranged, toothed, dark green leaves look almost quilted! Evenly spaced prominent veins angle off from the mid-rib to create a pleated look on the upper surface. Eye-catching red fruits develop from white flowers, and songbirds will enjoy them as a nutrient-rich resource food before winter. The show starts once the nights start getting cooler. In most areas, you'll enjoy a lovely fall color display of rich red and purple foliage.
Shasta is a fantastic deciduous shrub that's hardy in USDA growing zones 5 through 8. In late spring, the bees and butterflies flock to your shrub’s blooms, then in autumn, you'll enjoy the birds flocking to the last season harvest and the purple-burgundy foliage.
Planting and Application:
These wide-spreading, medium-sized shrubs are a delightful way to accent the start of a garden path, for instance. Use one by the corner of your garage to elevate the entry into your side yard. Use a single one as a bold focal point. Or, plant a row of them to become a wonderfully showy, flowering backdrop. If you have the space, add a long row along the front of your property or decorate a wide side yard. You'll make the world a prettier place!
Create a beautiful backdrop for your mixed garden borders. Or, place several behind your patio furniture as an outstanding privacy screen. Viburnum also makes a memorable hedge. Relax with the even tempo of their horizontal branches. Add a pretty row along the edge of a woodland garden to mark the boundary between domestication and wilderness with these informal, elegant shrubs that work great along the edge of the woods.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
This variety of easy-care Viburnum will perform in either full sun or part shade. It needs at least four hours of direct sunlight a day. Well-drained soil is best. Elevate your shrubs in a raised bed if your soil retains water. Thereafter, provide a medium amount of water on a regular basis. Mulch over the root system to cut down on surface evaporation. If you live with deer in your area, apply repellent spray on the day of planting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Viburnum Bushes Fragrant?
The flowers on Shasta Doublefile have little to no scent.
When Do You Prune Flowering Viburnum Shrubs?
Viburnum shrubs bloom on old wood, so it is very important to only prune them immediately after the flowers fade. Should you wish to enjoy the fruit that forms after the flowers fade, then do not prune, instead remove one-third of the oldest, fattest stems that are no longer as vigorous. Pruning them out at the ground level. This leaves fruit for birds and winter interest and increases overall plant vigor while reducing the size of your shrub.
Do Viburnums Like Full Sun or Shade? What is the Best Location for Viburnum?
Viburnums in general need full sun for the most fruit and flowers, but also do well in partial shade and afternoon shade. Highly adaptable, they enjoy mulched, enriched, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. They need regular moisture while young, but once established will only need supplemental moisture during extreme heat and drought.
Does Shasta Doublefile Viburnum Produce Fruit?
Shasta Viburnum produces showy scarlet-red fruit in the fall when a suitable pollinator shrub is nearby.
Does Viburnum Spread? How tall does Shasta Doublefile get?
Shasta Doublefile Viburnum can form suckers at the base of the plant, but these can be removed when pruning after flowering or mowed down if you do not wish them to spread. Not invasive, these plants will politely form tidy thickets over time when allowed. Shasta Doublefile Viburnum can grow 6-8 feet tall and 8-12 feet wide in optimal conditions.
Do Viburnum Shrubs Lose Their Leaves in Winter?
The Shasta Doublefile Viburnum can have a brick-red or plum-purple fall color and is a deciduous shrub that will lose its foliage for the winter.
