The Regent Saskatoon Serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia 'Regent') is an early-flowering, ornamental shrub. This gently mounded deciduous form can be trained as a multi-branched tree-form, is hardy and tolerant of many conditions! The green foliage turns shades of yellow and burgundy in the fall, for an added bonus in addition to the plant's other stellar features.

This Serviceberry cultivar tends to flower early in the spring with ¾ inch, 5-petaled white flowers. These fragrant little blooms grow in clusters before the leaves appear, and are so numerous that they are sure to have a dazzling effect upon the appearance of your spring yard. Butterflies and early emerging bees fully appreciate and take advantage of the nectar and pollen resource, providing a meal for them and encouragement to stay and pollinate your other plants!

After the flowers of your Regent Serviceberry have faded, small green berries will appear, eventually turning a dark blue in June when they're ready to eat, giving them the other common name June Berry. They look similar to blueberries, and taste just as good. Some say the flavor has a slightly nutty taste. It's best to cook these berries and juice them, discarding the small seeds. Once processed, you can make incredible preserves, syrup and juice! Keep whole and bake the berries in shortbread, muffins, or other baked goods.

Planting and Application:

It would look terrific as a shrub border or planted in front of a dark backdrop to highlight the Serviceberry's colors. Set off spring and fall with the beautiful colors these shrubby trees provide! Anchor your home's foundation or shade a small section of your garden with dappled shade. Pollinator gardens and backyard seating areas light up with these airy trees! You'll love these ornamental flowering fall color trees for your edible landscape!

Serviceberries are often used in preserves and in pies, and if you don't use them, the birds will love them! Group or cluster in odd numbers for bird-friendly habitat, shelter and food sources in naturalized plantings near your back property. Suckering freely when allowed, these form groves readily. Or use closely planted rows of other Serviceberry or in a mixed-tree planting for light screening and privacy that neighbors won't mind! These easy care trees are highly adaptable and versatile, so much so that they're often a go-to choice for commercial plantings and landscaping!

Mulch the root system well for insulation and moisture retention, and to conceal any of the dropped berries that may stain pavement or grass for a short period each summer.

  • Prune Late Winter & Early Spring
  • Fire Blight, Powdery Mildew & Drought Resistant Once Established

The Serviceberry has traditionally had many uses. Native Americans used to make pemmican and soups from the Serviceberry to supplement their daily diets. The plant was thought to have medicinal properties, and it was also used as a dye. Whatever uses you value in your Regent Saskatoon Serviceberry, it's sure to deliver.
