The classic Asian-inspired landscape ornamental, the Chinzan Satsuki Azalea (Rhododendron x 'Chinzan') welcomes spring with bright pink spring blooms that have slight speckles in their throats. Attracting Bees, butterflies, and Hummingbirds, the blooms can last until June in some conditions!

The rounded to lance-shaped and often lustrous leaves are dark green and offer the perfect backdrop for the big trusses of blooms and other plants in your garden! Typically broadleaf evergreens in most climates, Azalea in cooler winter areas may drop some older leaves when the weather turns in the fall.

Satsuki Azalea Hybrids grow best throughout USDA plant hardiness zones 6 - 10, growing moderately into a naturally rounded 2-3 foot tall and wide shrub without much maintenance. Satsuki Azalea translates to 'fifth month' as it blooms approximately 60 days after the spring equinox in its native range.

Planting and Application:

A must-have for the Japanese-style, or Zen-inspired garden, the Satsuki hybrid Azalea has long been regarded as delicate, low-growing specimens and elegant landscape accents for hundreds of years! Typically chosen for Bonsai, these tidy shrubs flower in profusion while maintaining their adaptability and hardiness!

Use this naturally-rounded flowering ornamental as your primary foundation hedge, as colorful, low facer plantings, and front to middle of the garden accents - either in rows, groups, or spectacular specimens on raised berms! Loving moist, rich soil, the pampered Cottage garden or mixed into a Rose garden suit these space-saving brilliant little shrubs just fine!

These rounded and tidy shrubs look perfectly trimmed without all the work and Chinzan Satsuki Azaleas happily grace the understory, beneath the dappled shade of larger trees, or add beauty to the edge of a woodland garden!

  • Light & Bright Pink Blooms
  • Smaller Broadleaf Evergreen Flowering Shrub
  • Naturally Formal Rounded Shape
  • Vital Spring Nectar For Pollinators & Hummingbirds
  • Can Be Trained As Bonsai
  • Small Hedges, Landscape Definition, Prominent Specimens & Shade Gardens

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Members of the Rhododendron family, these ornamentals are easy to grow! Growing best in partial shade, both dappled all-day shade and afternoon shade with morning sun. This flowering shrub will need fast-draining, acidic soil for best performance and regular even moisture access throughout the growing season, plus winter watering in areas with drying northern winds.

Naturally growing in thin soil on mountain slopes, their shallow root system does not like soggy soil. "Mounding up" when planting best supports their shallow root systems. Create a mound or raised bed about 18 inches tall with Nature Hills Root Booster mixed into the soil and plant it into that mound. Leave several inches of root ball visible above the ground. Top-dress the surface with pine needle straw or mulch, compost, or peat moss.

Only shear or prune flowering broad-leaved evergreen shrubs right after the flowers have faded to avoid removing next year's spring display.

  • Best in Part Sun/Shade, Dapple Shade & Afternoon Shade Locations
  • Enriched, Acidic, Well-Drained Soil
  • Even Moisture All Growing Season
  • Prune After Flowers Fade Only
  • Appreciates Mounded Up Mulched Beds

The pretty Chinzan Satsuki Azalea will add its elegance and graceful form to your shade garden for years to come! But only if you order yours today before they're gone at NatureHills.com!

Azalea & Rhododendron Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the best place to plant an Azalea bush?

Azaleas and Rhododendrons prefer partial shade (both dappled shade all day or morning sun with afternoon shade). Plant in a slightly acidic, consistently moist, enriched and well-drained soil location for best results. Their shallow roots dislike soggy soil but thrive with a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch over their surface.

Are Azalea bushes low maintenance?

Azalea and Rhododendron shrubs are very easy to grow and low maintenance. Water during drought, prune only after flowering and fertilize with an acid-loving organic, slow-release flowering plant fertilizer.

What is the difference between Rhododendrons and Azaleas?

All Azaleas are Rhododendrons but not all Rhodondendrons are Azaleas. Azalea tend to be smaller in size with smaller leaves and stems, while Rhododendrons can be larger with stout branching and larger bloom trusses. There can both be either deciduous or broad-leaved evergreens.
