Shipping
To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.
Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

A cold-hardy Asian Persimmon with astringent fruit you can eat right off the tree? Introducing the Saijo Persimmon Tree (Diospyros kaki 'Saijo') that has all that and more! Growing just 15-25 feet in height and boasting a slim 12-18 foot width, Saijo is ideal for the smaller landscape!
This upright, rounded tree fills out with lush glossy leaves that by late spring will be embellished with curious creamy white female blooms and pink male flowers! The gorgeous branching and ornamental effect these trees create are only heightened when the glossy green foliage turns brilliant shades of orange, yellow, and red for the fall!
Saijo translates to "the very best one" and this astringent Persimmon variety shows you why when the luscious light orange egg-shaped fruit by late September to early October. The yellow flesh offers a honey-like flavor that is both intense and refined. The elongated fruit is intensely sweet and juicy with few-to-no seeds making them perfect for fresh eating, once fully ripe and soft. Saijo is also great for drying, baking, and freezing!
Planting and Application:
A popular variety for deer and wildlife, you'll want to plant another Asian Persimmon nearby to not only feed these visitors while having enough to enjoy for yourself, but to also boost pollination between each tree! Partially self-fertile, Saijo, like all other fruit trees, performs better with a friend!
Create linear orchards that double as privacy screens, shelterbelts, and tasty property division by leaving the lower limbs intact and using Saijo as a shrubby barrier tree! You'll have a pretty hedge that attracts birds, bees, and butterflies that the neighbors won't be able to be upset over. Especially if you are willing to share!
When used as an ornamental lawn tree, Persimmon offers beauty all year round! From the ornately held winter branching to spring's unique blooms, then the lush summer foliage, and autumn's incredible fall color and glowing fruit dangling from every branch! You will surely want this gem planted front and center on a front lawn berm for all to see! This beauty is also tall enough to provide cooling shade around seating areas and patios, without overcrowding your property of any size!
Create a truly unique specimen tree without sacrificing space by training your Saijo as an Espalier tree!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Persimmon, like all fruit trees, need the full sun to flower and fruit their best. Plant in a slightly acidic, enriched, well-drained location with regular water access. Mulch the site well with 3-4 inches of arborist bark chips, and provide a regular amount of acid-loving plant fertilizer.
You may need to thin the fruit that develops if heavy crops begin to develop in the early summers. Prune your Persimmon tree once it is finished fruiting in the autumn.
Easy to grow and naturally resistant to many common fruit tree diseases, these low-chill trees are parthenocarpic (may set seedless fruit without pollination), but all fruit trees get a pollination boost from a partner plant nearby. Having better cold-hardiness for USDA hardiness zones 7 and up, Saijo is equally an ideal deciduous fruit tree for the south!
- Cold Hardy & Needs Full Sun
- Moist Fertile Environment
- Needs Slightly-Acidic Well-Drained Soil
- Thin Heavy Fruit Sets & Prune In Fall
- Low-Chill ~200 Chill Hours
- High Pest Resistance
The Saijo Asian Persimmon Tree is a delectably sweet and unique fruit tree that should be your number one choice to include in your orchard this year! Order "the very best one" today at Nature Hills!
