#ProPlantTips for Care
Planting your own fruit tree can feel daunting, but no fear--we have a blog you can read here about planting fruit trees!
Give your Royal Apricot Tree a location with full sun, this tree loves the sun. The soil, however, doesn't need to be specific. This tree is widely adaptable. It is fine in drought conditions and fine in moist conditions.
For the health of your tree, prune in late winter or early spring when the leaves and flowers start to open. Pruning at this time will ensure that the pruning cuts will heal quickly, preventing diseases from entering the cuts.
When pruning the Royal Apricot Tree, remove all of the damaged and broken limbs and all of the branches that are within 18 inches off the ground. For more information on pruning your fruit tree, read our blog post here.
Pruning will not only keep your Royal Apricot Tree healthy, but control the size and maintenance of it! Just be sure to do your research, as pruning too hard can lead to limited fruit.
Water your Royal Apricot like any other tree. They really don't require a consistent watering system, but for the best establishment possible, make sure to take extra care to water thoroughly during its first growing season.
A great way to see if your tree is thirsty is to use the finger test. Stick your pointer finger up to the second knuckle in the dirt near the base. If it's dry, give your tree a drink. If it's still slightly damp, go ahead and skip for the day.
We suggest adding a layer of mulch around the base of your tree starting about an inch from the trunk. This will help even out moisture levels while conserving water and protecting your tree's roots.
The Royal Apricot Tree is the perfect addition to your landscaping masterpiece! If your zip code falls into growing zones 7 - 10, be sure to order the Royal Apricot Tree today!
Apricot Tree Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take for Royal Apricot Trees to bear fruit?
Nature Hills Nursery sells fruit trees with mature root systems that are already three to four years old, so you’ll enjoy fruit sooner than you would with younger trees! Expect your young apricot tree (Prunus armeniaca 'Blenheim Royal') to begin fruiting usually by the 2nd-4th year after you plant them.
How Fast Do Royal Apricot Trees Grow?
Once your apricot tree has been established (after the first year), it can typically add 12-18 inches of new growth in a growing season. If your plants are adding less than that in a season, it may be worth your while to check the fertility level.
Where do Royal Apricot Trees Grow Best?
Apricot trees grow best in well-drained, fertile soil in at least 6 hours of full sun per day or more. Provide good air circulation and moderate, yet consistent water. They do need very well-drained soil.
Do You Need 2 Apricot Trees to Produce Fruit?
Many apricot trees are self-fertile, however planting more than one apricot tree that blooms at about the same time, boosts yields on both trees and extends your harvest time! The Royal Apricot Tree is self-pollinating and doesn't need a pollinator to produce fruit.
Apricot trees that need a pollinator partner will have the appropriate tree(s) listed for you to choose from. Nature Hills Nursery lists pollinators for each tree on the product pages. This gives you must-have information right at your fingertips!
No room? Look into High-Density Planting techniques, or choose a semi-dwarf or dwarf fruit tree.
When Should Royal Apricot Tree be Planted?
Bareroot apricot trees can be planted in spring when they are available in your area. Container-grown apricot trees can be very successfully transplanted all throughout the growing season. Check for first and last frost dates for your area with your local County Extension Office.
- Plant bareroot apricot trees in the early spring.
- Plant container-grown trees anytime the ground is not frozen by digging a hole as deep as the soil line and twice as wide.
