A tidy tree with fabulous fall color! If you have enough room to plant a large shade tree, you'll want to consider the exciting seedless new selection of gorgeous native Liquidambar. The Round-Lobed Sweetgum Tree (Liquidambar styraciflua 'Rotundiloba') won't produce those spiny little fruit balls but will show off all its fantastic foliage and fall color!
It's becoming very popular because it's a much tidier tree than the original species. You'll still get all the amazing fall show, but you'll have one less chore on your list! Imagine one planted to shade your patio, and you'll quickly understand the appeal of a seedless Sweetgum shade tree.
Rotundiloba's conical trunk is a bit wider at the base than other Liquidambars. However, just like other Liquidambar varieties, as the tree ages, the bark grows distinctively deep, corky ridges, which add a tremendous amount of visual appeal. This deeply textured bark is a big part of this tree's beautiful display.
But you could be forgiven for forgetting all about the bark once you see the star-shaped leaves of this tree lit up like a firecracker for an entire month in autumn! Dark, glossy, forest green leaves develop streaks of deep red here and there, the color coming on slowly but steadily as the fall temperatures begin to drop.
The intensity of the red builds, creating an ever-changing display of different depths of red - finally turning a glossy dark purple before the leaf falls! What a show!
Planting and Application:
This large variety is sure to become popular with city parks and commercial building managers! The easy-care specimens and shade trees create quite the spectacle for both front-yard curb appeal and back-yard shade! The strong limbs shelter many songbirds and wildlife, and stand up to wind and storms!
These seedless cultivars are ideal for setting around your seating areas, paths, and in lawn plantings without worrying about stepping on spikey seed balls! The lush foliage casts cooling shade and reduces your home's cooling bill. Give these large trees plenty of room to spread to get the best display.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
For the best color and strength, plant Sweetgum in full sun with well-drained soil, adapting to nearly any type of soil from saline, alkaline, and clay. Water new trees regularly, but once established, Sweetgum can tolerate wetter soils and periodic drought for a short time. Give new trees regular watering, and thereafter, water regularly to protect your investment.
Top off with a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch and spread it three feet outside the canopy. Spread the mulch out further for mature trees to keep the spiked seedpods from getting into the lawn. You will find that your Sweetgum has such a great form you will need to do little or no pruning, but if you do prune it is best to trim in the spring. Sweetgum trees are pest and disease-free and easy to grow and care for!
- Best in Full Sun
- Adaptable to Most Well-Drained Soil Conditions
- Handles Periodic Moisture & Drought Once Established
- Prune Early Spring
- Pest & Disease Resistant
This variety was carefully selected for its ability to provide dazzling fall color in milder climates where fall color is not as common. Now you don't have to miss out on that amazing fall color display. What are you waiting for? Order your own Round-Lobed Sweetgum Tree today from Nature Hills!
Super Seedless Variety
Liquidambars are long-lived trees, and the "gum" or sap has been an important ingredient in flavorings, perfumes and assorted folk remedies and snake oils. Lumber and veneer are also harvested from Sweetgums, as they are commonly known.
The Rotundiloba Liquidambar is one of the first seedless selection released. This special selection of tree eliminates the trouble of dealing with the spiny seed that is associated with most all other varieties of Liquidambars.
Rotundiloba Liquidambar is a hardy selection that develops wonderful fall color in the nearly chill-free zones as dependably as in any cold climate.
