The Redleaf Rose (Rosa glauca) is a hardy Shrub Rose that produces bright pink 5-petalled fragrant flowers in June followed by long-lasting bright red Rosehips in the fall. But the real claim to fame for this shrub is its namesake bold red stems and red new leaves.

The reddish-violet stems and beautifully colored foliage turns more purple in sunny locations, but a gray-green with mauve in shade areas. The foliage has a reddish tint to it throughout the summer and then it turns even redder in the fall! Redleaf produces many bright red hips after blooming, becoming attractive throughout the fall and winter.

This Shrub Rose has its own root, and the advantage of own-root Roses is that once established they are very resilient! If winter's freezing breezes kill the top growth, the Rose will grow back in the spring, and the recovered Rose will look the same as the one you purchased! Incredibly cold hardy throughout the USDA growing zones 2 to 7!

Planting and Application:

The open single-petals of this Wild Rose will attract loads of pollinators seeing a nectar and pollen-rich source of food. Snip a few blooms with heavy gloves to get around the thorns and use these darling blossoms in bouquets! Use this Rose for fall and winter interest with the colorful fall foliage and orange hips that birds love to eat! You will love them too for fresh and dried décor, Vitamin C-rich preserves and tea, crafts, and potpourri!

Darling as a specimen shrub, these native Roses are fantastic accents and barrier shrubs that few want to tangle with in addition to providing pretty screening and hedgerows! Add to mixed shrub borders or create a gorgeous flowering hedge.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

These Roses bloom best in full sun, anything less and you’ll have far fewer flowers and less vigor. Provide a location with good air circulation and well-drained soil. Preferring enriched, moderately moist areas, water enough to never let them dry out completely. All plants appreciate a 3-4 inch thick layer of arborist mulch chips. Prune in early spring, and for more about pruning Roses, winterizing Roses, and un-wintering Roses - Check out our Garden Blog.

  • Full Sun Lover
  • Moist Enriched Well-Drained Soil
  • Regular Fertility & Moderate Moisture Needs
  • Prune Early Spring
  • Grown on Own Root - Not Grafted
