The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

The rugged and highly adaptable Rocky Mountain Juniper Tree (Juniperus scopulorum) is a western version of the Eastern Red Cedar, thriving in coastal and mountainous areas throughout the Pacific coast. Going by other common names like the Colorado Red Cedar, Western Red Cedar, River Juniper, and Rocky Mountain Red Cedar, these fluffy rounded, pyramidal trees are incredibly easy to grow!
Hardy natives that feature scale-like foliage that varies because of the native genetics, ranging from light green to blueish and dark blue-green, are often accented by dark-blue glaucous berries! If you can see it through the dense branching, the shaggy reddish-brown to gray bark looks shredded and exfoliates in thin strips as the tree ages.
Graceful ornamentals, these are highly aromatic plants! Their wood is favored for cedar chests, lumbar, and rot-resistant fence posts! Rocky Mountain Junipers are wonderfully hardy throughout USDA hardiness zones 3 to 7, these Coniferous Evergreens can reach 30-40 feet in height or more in optimal conditions and have a varying width of 3 to 15 feet wide.
Planting and Application:
Wildlife loves the berries and roosting in the compact shelter the dense limbs provide! Create naturalized groupings and hedgerows that not only attract wildlife but also provide you with screening, privacy, windbreaks, shelterbelts, snow barriers, and even blocking out sound!
Rocky Mountain Junipers are also prominent specimens and focal points, adding year-round greenery or blue-greenery to your landscape throughout the year! Create a front yard berm with one of these large and easy-to-grow trees will become easy accents that the songbirds will love!
Include these evergreens in your mixed shrub borders as landscape definition and backdrops, or to add a pop of color while sculpting the winter snow! The rugged love of rocky and sandy soil means Rock Gardens gain a big evergreen boost. Native plantings and xeric sites gain a drought-tolerant specimen!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Junipers are incredibly rugged! Best in full sun, these plants grow in nearly any kind of soil as long as it is well-drained! Provide regular moisture during their first year in your garden, but once established, Junipers become drought-tolerant and even handle salt spray and high humidity!
Slow-growing but also low maintenance, deer and many typical pests steer clear of these trees. If needed, prune in the early spring, but Rocky Mountain Junipers look best when allowed to grow in their natural form with their limbs all the way to the ground. In areas with drying northern winds, provide your trees with an anti-desiccant and deep winter watering to prepare them for winter.
- Full Sun
- Moderate to Low Moisture Needs
- Highly Adaptable To All Kinds of Well-Drained Soil
- Prune in Early Spring If Needed
- Deer & Pest Resistant
