If you want masses of gorgeous, brilliant lavender every spring, take a good look at the P.J.M. Rhododendron (Rhododendron x 'P.J.M.'). The first time it blooms in your yard, you will wonder if it is even real! The amethyst orchid-colored flowers will cover the plant in early spring like a cloud. The massive flower display is lightly fragrant and completely breathtaking!
The delicate floral clusters of 4-9 blossoms. You'll love their subtle scent, and you won't be the only one! Butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees will flock to your yard to feast on the nectar.
Even the foliage is lovely. Every vibrant dark green leaf frames the flowers perfectly. This is a broad-leaf evergreen shrub with ornamental features! Once the beautiful blooms are passed, the foliage fills out the shrub for a rich, full appearance in your landscape. The leaves persist on the plant all year round.
As autumn approaches, the P.J.M. Rhododendron offers up one last blast of color as the foliage transitions. The foliage turns an incredible purple and russet colors heading into winter. Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 8, these upright 4-6 foot tall and 3-4 foot wide shrubs. The overall shape of the shrub is somewhat rounded when younger but will become more oval as the plant's age and get some size to them.
The shrub has an upright, mounding habit and compact form. It tends to naturally maintain a neat appearance, so it won't require much fuss from you if you prefer to let it grow naturally. This variety is well known to be particularly winter-hardy and long-lived. In fact, under optimal conditions, your P.J.M. will live up to 40 years!
Planting and Application:
With a profusion of dazzling, lavender purple blooms in spring and gorgeous fall colors, this selection deserves a special place in the landscape. They are tremendous when planted as foundation plants along the house. They are so elegant and make the perfect plants to use near your front entrance. These are also one of the most beautiful plants to use near the patio or seating areas in the yard.
Plant a row in a slight zig-zag along the length of a shrub border in your backyard. You'll get an outstanding effect that's impossible to miss. You'll need to host an annual "P.J.M. Party" to welcome spring! Your hummingbirds and butterflies will be expecting RSVPs as well!
A single specimen can be placed anywhere in your yard to draw your eye. Use this as a focal point in a garden "vignette" or scene. Now envision a mass planting of them in your understory planting in a woodland garden - simply spectacular!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
P.J.M. Rhododendrons look so fragile, but they are tough as nails. Follow these quick tips for success. They'll love the east side of your house or having some protection from the hottest part of the day. In cooler climates, they can tolerate more sun. Pour a bag of Nature Hills Root Booster in the bottom of your planting hole after it's dug, but before you place the plant. That is designed to help the roots establish in your native soil quickly.
Rhododendrons in general love rich acidic soil that has lots of organic matter. Mix a generous handful of Dr. Earth Acid Lovers Organic and Natural Planting Mix well with your native soil to get them off to a good start when planting.
They will greatly appreciate a few inches of mulch over the top of the soil. Please be careful not to pile up the mulch against the trunks of the plant. Provide even, regular amounts of moisture to keep your P.J.M. healthy and stress-free. Once the flowers fade after the spring blast, it's time to do any trimming if necessary. Right after the flowers finish, your Rhododendron will put on a nice flush of new growth and set next year's flower buds. Fertilize them every two months in the growing season.

Azalea and Rhododendron Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the best place to plant a Rhododendron bush?
Azaleas and Rhododendrons prefer partial shade (both dappled shade all day or morning sun with afternoon shade). Plant in a slightly acidic, consistently moist, enriched and well-drained soil location for best results. Their shallow roots dislike soggy soil but thrive with a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch over their surface.
How big does a Rhododendron bush get?
P.J.M. Rhododendron can reach a 4 - 6 foot tall and 3 - 4 foot width in optimal conditions.
Are Rhododendron bushes low maintenance?
Azalea and Rhododendron shrubs are very easy to grow and low maintenance. Water during drought, prune only after flowering, and fertilize with an acid-loving organic, slow-release flowering plant fertilizer.
What is the difference between Rhododendrons and Azaleas?
All Azaleas are Rhododendrons but not all Rhodondendrons are Azaleas. Azalea tends to be smaller-sized with smaller leaves and stems, while Rhododendrons can be larger with stout branching and larger bloom trusses. There can both be either deciduous or broad-leaved evergreens.
