Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Support native ecosystems by planting the Purple Prairie Clover (Dalea purpurea) is an absolutely charming, deep-rooted, beautiful native legume with sweet, stubby purple blooms. Each bloom looks like it's wearing a frilly light purple tutu, dotted here and there with brilliant contrasting orange spangles!

This eye-catching selection supports beneficial insects to your yard in droves as it blooms through June and July. Growing naturally into an upright vase shape, with finely textured leaves, snip a few stems for bouquet filler, but leave most of the flowers on the plant for your native bees and butterflies! These are vital nectar and pollen resources for a wide variety of winged visitors! Especially as host plant for endangered Southern Dogface, California Dogface, and Reakirt's Blue Butterflies!

When we say this herbaceous perennials is hardy, we mean hardy! Thriving throughout USDA growing zones 3 to 9, there is little that fazes this unique shortgrass prairie wildflower! Deer, heat, chill, storms, drought or wildfires - Prairie Clovers long taproot handles it all and keeps on going! Growing just 18-24 inches tall when in bloom, these airy, clumping herbaceous perennials spread just 12-15 inches wide.

Planting and Application:

This hardy native wildflower is ideal for use in a Xeric landscape, commercial property, and Rock Garden, in front of a sunny perennial border, or as a "Filler" in container gardens in the full sun! Create pretty informal Cottage gardens and meadow installations, with other wildflowers and pollinator borders, or mix into prairie shortgrass restoration for a pop of purple among the waving Grasses and other flowering perennials!

Add a touch of wild vibrancy to Cottage Gardens, mixed perennial borders and meadow installations! Plant a pollinator garden that doubles as a cutting garden, giving you lots of quirky flowers for bouquets until autumn!

It is a good partner plant for other Prairie natives and other neighboring plants. Like all legumes, it works to fix nitrogen and enrich the surrounding soil, making them beneficial for soil health and soil improvement! So include them in a perimeter garden around your Victory garden to help improve the soil and to draw pollinators to your orchards, too!

Great for use as forage for cattle and livestock grazing, this shortgrass prairie plant is an important food source for antelope, deer and game birds, and Sharp-Tailed Grouse. Mixed with native Ornamental Grasses and other wildflowers like their purple flowering form, Prairie Clover are very low-maintenance once established!

Have a steep slope? Purple Prairie Clover also prevents soil erosion with its long tap roots that reach far down below the plant. It stands up to hot, dry conditions and is long-lived. For slopes, give us a call for high quantity pricing over 500 plants.

  • Rounded Purple Blooms With Orange Accents
  • Mid-Season Butterfly Magnet
  • Airy Branching and Fine-Textured Foliage
  • Small Perennial Wildflower - Fixes Nitrogen In Soil
  • Prevents Soil Erosion, Prairie Restoration, Pollinators & Informal Garden Use

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Prairie Clovers are xeric perennials that need full sun and very well-drained soil. Not minding the quality of the soil. Provide regular water while young plants are getting started, but once established, they are pretty much self-sufficient. The nice long tap root of this hardy perennial is highly drought tolerant! Cut the tops back in late winter or early spring.
