Growing Zones 2-7
People rave about the fragrant, ruffled blooms of Purple Pavement Rose (Rosa rugosa 'Purple Pavement') for its beauty, value, and ability to tolerate cold, salt, heat, and beginning gardeners! It is one of the most well-behaved Rugosas, growing into a naturally compact, rounded shape perfect for modern lots.
Large, showy semi-double purple-red blooms make a huge visual impact, especially with their contrasting yellow stamens. Each bloom features ruffled petals for a soft, engaging appearance. Filling out with dark green, quilted, leathery foliage that burnishes to maroon and gold in fall.
The flowers repeat from spring through fall, then develop into marvelous bright red rose hips, rich in Vitamin C for a welcome autumnal display! This reliable landscape shrub is extremely cold-hardy and grows quickly to achieve a fuller appearance. And when we talk about cold resistance, we mean it! These Rugosa Rose Bushes are hardy down to USDA growing zones 2 through 7.
Planting and Application:
Rosa Rugosa Purple Pavement Rose makes an excellent hedge to define your space without muss or fuss. Space them 30 inches apart on center, measuring from the center of one to the center of the next for a mass planting or solid hedge! Stagger additional rows behind the first in a zigzagging planting pattern. They also have the impenetrable thorns of the family that keep unwanted visitors out of your garden!
Rugosa Roses have thorns along their stems and make great barrier plantings. Mass them at the corner of your front lawn to deter people from cutting across your property. You'll create a brilliant mass planting to entice butterflies to previously bare ground.
This durable selection will stay nice and tight for a perfect fit underneath windows. Modernize your foundation planting with their splashy style! These radiant blooms are fragrant and look great in cut flower bouquets!
Because Purple Pavement Rose develops red hips, it should be considered for wildlife-friendly landscapes. Harvest yours for homemade Rose Hip jelly, dry them for tea, or leave them for the songbirds to enjoy after a few freeze/thaw cycles.

Rugosa Roses love the full sun and bloom best in at least 6 hours of sunlight a day. Thriving in about any kind of well-drained soil, Rugosa also tolerates a wide range of soil types and moisture conditions but does its very best in regular moisture and enriched soil locations. Provide a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch to hold in moisture and insulate the root system.
Provide Roses with consistent, regular amounts of water until established and during dry weather. Apply high-quality Rose food, following the directions on the label. Use Nature Hills Root Booster during planting according to the directions.
Pruning is best done in early spring if needed. Read all you need about Rose pruning Roses Here, and about winterizing your Roses Here and un-wintering Roses in Spring in our #ProPlantTips Garden Blog!
