Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Delivery and Shipping

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

*If you have found your zone already, it will be highlighted in the table below.

Grow an evocative evergreen specimen with native Single-Needle Piñón Pine (Pinus monophylla). The Single-Needle Pinon is a Pine in the pinyon Pine group, native to the southwest United States and northwest Baja, Mexico. This mid-sized tree has fragrant resin and wood to perfume your landscape with the aroma of the Southwest.

Their lush presentation stems from a thick trunk and gray-green to strongly waxy pale blue-green needles that remain on the plentiful branches for many years. Young trees feature a compact, oval shape that eventually opens up a bit in form.

This showy choice will eventually produce brown, rose-shaped cones that produce healthy, valuable, edible pine nuts. Press them for oil, or process these "large seed" species into pesto and added to salads, baked goods and as a resinous flavor in sauces and savory dishes! Harvest Pine nuts from this "large seed" species, but be prepared for a multi-step hand process in late fall. From drying the nuts on racks to removing the inner shell, it's no wonder the finished product costs so much in farmer's markets.

Planting and Application:

Wildlife appreciates both the nuts and the shelter of this native Pine, which is nicknamed Colorado Pinyon Pine, and sometimes referred to as the Oneneedle Pinyon Pine. Birds and wildlife seek these trees out and eat the nuts; including several species of Jays and Clark's Nutcracker. Single-Needle Piñón Pine is a water-wise choice for Xeriscape landscapes. It also offers visual protection as an effective privacy screen due to its very dense needles and year-round coverage.

Control erosion on vulnerable hillsides with a mass planting of Single-Needle Piñón Pine. Use an informal approach with varied spacing and plenty of open space between the trees to replicate a natural stand. This is a wonderfully redolent choice for small space gardens. However, it is advised that you use Single-Needle Piñón Pine away from your defensible space near your home, and keep the ground beneath it well-raked.

  • Fragrant Gray-Green/Blue-Green Needles
  • Native Evergreen Tree
  • Compact Oval Form - Great For Small Properties
  • Edible Seeds & Rose-Shaped Cones
  • Xeric, Wildlife, Year-Round Color, Specimen, Hedge & Erosion on Hills

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Plant Single-Needle Piñón Pine trees in full sun in very well-drained soil. Select their permanent planting site, because they do develop a long taproot and resent moving. Provide lifetime performance enhancement with symbiotic Nature Hills Root Booster in the planting hole. Get more expert planting tips from the NatureHills.com Horticulture team. During the first season, get the root system well-established with a regular schedule of supplemental water. After that, plan to soak your Single-Needle Piñón Pine periodically through the summer season and in dry weather. You can tip prune in early spring to encourage branching. Remove limbs back to the trunk as needed to avoid overcrowding and increase air circulation through the canopy.
