Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Need a unique gift plant, or high-style accent for your home or office? Then you need to check out the traditional living art form called Kokedama! Easy to care for and maintain, Kokedama has been practiced in Japan for centuries, translating literally as 'Moss Ball', Kokedama is a form of Bonsai where a plant has its roots and soil bundled in a ball of moss and wrapped in twine or string, eliminating the need for a pot or container! Now Nature Hills Nursery is proud to be shipping several varieties of ready-to-enjoy Kokedamas!

If you love air plants and long-lasting flowers, then you'll love the colorful Tillandsia Bromeliad (Bromeliaceae spp.) elevated into the traditional art form of Kokedama! These epiphytes thrive in high air moisture environments and are easy-going houseplants! Their slender curving and arching foliage is stiff yet fine-textured and looks perfect spouting out of the mossy round ball.

Also called Pink Quill Plants, sprouting from the center is a large plated paddle-like bract with a lovely scaled pattern that emerges in pink or purple. From which the dark purple or red blooms emerge, alternating on either side! The flowers may fade, but the colorful bract remains for weeks to months for your enjoyment!

Bromeliads are tough, long-lasting and low-maintenance air purifying plants that improve your health while increasing oxygen levels in your home or office! Requiring a permanent location in your home or office, Bromeliads are easy to care for houseplants that do not need much in the way of fussing over or care! Best of all, the Kokedama root 'binding' method - they will never need to be repotted!

Displaying Your Kokedama!

Forgiving and easy-going plants, Tillandsia Bromeliad Kokedama are unique living decorations for an office desk at work or home! #ProPlantTips for Care:

Epiphytes, or air plants like Bromeliads, do their very best in higher air humidity, so be sure to mist your plant daily. For best growth, display your Kokedama in any kind of bright yet indirect sunlight, never direct sun. Although, Tillandsia can tolerate some partial shade and office lighting too.

To water your Kokedama, simply submerge the bottom 3/4ths of your moss ball in a dish or the sink and let soak for 5-10 minutes. Remove to a draining area for 20 minutes to let excess water run out of the root system. Then place it back into its display! Repeat as necessary, maintaining a moderate yet consistent moisture level. Tillandsia Bromeliads won't need to be watered as often as other houseplants, so check them regularly to ensure you are not overwatering at the roots.

Root rot is a death sentence for these plants, and because of many factors, the watering frequency will vary throughout the year. Dry winters with dehumidifiers running may require soaking a couple of times a week! You may even want to submerge the entire plant in dry weather or if the tips of your Bromeliad are turning brown. If your Kokedama is as light as air or your plant is wilting, you need to check it more often, or soak it a bit longer each time.

  • Use room temperature filtered, purified, or bottled water - even rainwater
  • Mist daily
  • Bright Indirect Light - Avoid direct sunlight
  • Soak for 5-10 minutes & let drain completely
  • Avoid AC & heating vent drafts
  • Use half-strength fertilizer in the soaking water in spring & fall
