A beautiful vivid purple Beardtongue, the Prairie Dusk Penstemon (Penstemon 'Prairie Dusk') has gorgeous lance-shaped deep green leaves and tall wands of bright purple trumpet-shaped blooms! Penstemon, also called Beard-tongues or Beardtongue, are named because of the fuzzy texture of their stamens! These are tough, resilient native American herbaceous perennials.
Prairie Dusk is a breath of fresh air with its vivid purple flowers! The plants form low clumps of deep green foliage and shoot up flower spikes in early summer, much to the delight of every hummingbird and beneficial pollinator in your area! Your summer bouquets will become enhanced with the spires of purple, as will summer porch and patio planters gain a vertical growing thriller plant!
Developed in Nebraska, this tough hybrid selection was chosen for its easy demeanor and exceptional hardiness. Drought-tolerant and deer-resistant throughout USDA growing zones 3 through 8, these are also cold-hardy and so easy-care!
Planting and Application:
The flowers stand out in the garden and especially if planted with gold or pink flowers as companions. Try planting it with Coronation Gold Yarrow, Ornamental Grasses, or Blazing Star Kobold Gayfeather, and count the compliments that roll in! Compact and smaller-sized perennials that are fast-growing and xeric, Penstemons native roots make them perfect for Fire-wise landscaping and Rock gardens.
Penstemon flowers are splendid in perennial borders and also make great cut flowers. Create waving rows of purple wands around your mailbox or front berm, sure to catch the eye of the neighbors! You and your neighbors won't be the only ones attracted to these purple beauties either! Hummingbirds and butterflies can't stay away from them. Prairie Dusk will animate your garden in a way that few other flowers can!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Beardtongue are herbaceous perennials that perform best in full sun and in well-drained soil conditions. Preferring average soil types on the lean side and regular moisture access throughout their first year. However, once established, these are wonderfully drought-tolerant and xeric plants! Appreciating a 3-4 inch thick layer of arborist mulch over the roots, these are very cold tolerant but love the extra layer of insulation.
You can leave these seed heads as winter interest and attract songbirds, or deadhead them to tidy up the mounds in fall. Prune mounds down late fall after frost, and divide every few years to maintain the vigor of the crown.
- Full Sun
- Average to Low Fertility & Average to Low Moisture
- Well-Drained Soil & Appreciates Mulch
