Enjoy a seasonal bounty of fresh, delicious pears when you plant our Comice Pear Tree (Pyrus 'Comice'). Dubbed the 'Connoisseur's Pear,' the Comice has been a generational favorite among growers and foodies, beloved for its deliciousness as a fresh-eating pear as well as its delightful culinary potential.

As winter turns to spring, watch in amazement as the tree puts on a spectacle for you (and passersby) to enjoy. It comes to life with pristine white blooms that attract butterflies and other pollinators who follow its subtle fragrance instinctively.

Comice pears are sweet and juicy with a firm texture that gives you that classic pear "snap" with every bite. The skin of the pear is light green and has a faint rosy blush that lets you know it was picked at the peak of perfection.

First introduced in the 1800s in France and quickly sealed its reputation as being a fantastic pear to grow. Comice is a traditional pear found in gift baskets during the Holidays.

How to Use Comice Pear Tree In The Landscape

European Pears are beautiful, ornamental trees that also bear superior fruit. Whether you choose to grow just one in your front yard for its natural landscape-enhancing beauty, or several lining your driveway, you’ll enjoy its year-round accents.

Plant several as a hedgerow for privacy and property definition, or in the backyard for a small orchard. Great as a small-statured shade tree over your patio and seating areas, or as a shaded anchor to larger garden beds. These are fantastic anywhere they are planted.

A beautiful specimen tree, Comice needs a pollinator to produce the best yield receiving the best pollination in a group of other suitable pears. If you are short on space, try this high-density planting trick in our Garden Blog!

The crunch of this pear and the firmness of its flesh make it ideal for baking, adding to a pear crisp, and baking pies. Its flesh also makes it a great pear for canning, letting you preserve some of your harvest for enjoyment later on in the year.

#ProPlantTips For Care

Hardy in USDA growing zones 4-9, these are full sun trees and do best with morning sun and at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. Adaptable to a range of conditions, this pear tree is easy to love and easy on the eyes too.

Provide ample water for your young tree while it becomes established, not allowing it to dry out between waterings. Then reduce your watering to moderate, yet consistent moisture during the heat of summer and when fruiting. While drought-tolerant, it’s best to protect your investment by providing supplemental watering in times of need.

Preferring rich, well-drained soil and a thick layer of mulch over the root systems surface for moisture retention and insulation from heat and cold.

Situate in an area that is protected from frost pockets and with good air circulation. Prune to keep an open canopy so that both sunlight and airflow reach the interior. Head over to our Garden Blog for more Fruit Tree Planting, Fruit Tree Pruning and Fruit Tree Care tips and tricks can be found!

The Comice basically takes care of itself once planted. Its upright, vigorous growth is easily maintained with minimal pruning, and its branches are tenaciously strong and stout.

Buy it for its looks, buy it for an abundant crop you can count on every season, or both. The Comice is revered among growers for its low-maintenance requirements and ease of growing. The Comice Pear is a lovely fruiting tree for your yard and will give you years of enjoyment with its spring display and superior fruit. Order at NatureHills.com today!

Great healthy tree.

I bought my comice pear last spring. It came already pruned with the branches growing out of all sides of the trunk with a very good root system. The The buds started to grow in less than two weeks. By the end of the summer each branch grew about 24 inches longer. Now on March 26, 2016 the buds have started to grow again, but it doesn't look like there will be any flowers this year. I'm hoping that by 2017 I'll have fruit.

Dear Joe,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your wonderful experience with your Comice Pear Tree! We’re delighted to hear that it arrived healthy, well-pruned, and that you saw such impressive growth through the summer—that’s a fantastic sign your tree is thriving.

It’s not uncommon for young fruit trees, like your Comice Pear, to take a couple of seasons before they start producing blossoms and fruit. Since it’s showing strong bud development already, it sounds like your tree is on the right track! Going forward, ensuring it gets plenty of sunlight, consistent watering (without overwatering), and the right fertilization in early spring can help encourage flowering and fruiting. Also, a gentle pruning in late winter, to shape the tree and remove any crossing branches, can improve airflow and sunlight exposure—a vital element for flowering.

If you haven't had a chance yet, our online resources on pear tree care might offer some helpful tips, especially on the specific fertilization schedule and pruning techniques tailored for Comice pears. We're always here if you have questions along the way!

We’re rooting for that tasty first harvest in 2017 and beyond!

Hi Joe,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your Comice Pear Tree! It’s wonderful to hear that it arrived healthy and robust, and that you noticed such great growth through the summer. Your observation about budding activity in spring is spot-on; sometimes, especially with young fruit trees, it can take a season or two for them to establish themselves fully and produce flowers and fruit.

Since you’re hopeful for fruit next year, just a quick tip: Comice Pears usually benefit from some cross-pollination, so if you have room for another compatible pear variety nearby, that can improve blossom and fruit production. Also, keep an eye on consistent watering and balanced fertilizing early in spring to support healthy flower development.

If you’d like, we have some great resources and guides on pruning, pollination, and fruit tree care designed to help gardeners like you get the best from your fruit trees, so let us know and we’d be happy to share those. Your tree sounds like it’s off to a great start — here’s to a bountiful harvest in 2017!
