Enjoy a seasonal bounty of fresh, delicious pears when you plant our Comice Pear Tree (Pyrus 'Comice'). Dubbed the 'Connoisseur's Pear,' the Comice has been a generational favorite among growers and foodies, beloved for its deliciousness as a fresh-eating pear as well as its delightful culinary potential.
As winter turns to spring, watch in amazement as the tree puts on a spectacle for you (and passersby) to enjoy. It comes to life with pristine white blooms that attract butterflies and other pollinators who follow its subtle fragrance instinctively.
Comice pears are sweet and juicy with a firm texture that gives you that classic pear "snap" with every bite. The skin of the pear is light green and has a faint rosy blush that lets you know it was picked at the peak of perfection.
First introduced in the 1800s in France and quickly sealed its reputation as being a fantastic pear to grow. Comice is a traditional pear found in gift baskets during the Holidays.
How to Use Comice Pear Tree In The Landscape
European Pears are beautiful, ornamental trees that also bear superior fruit. Whether you choose to grow just one in your front yard for its natural landscape-enhancing beauty, or several lining your driveway, you’ll enjoy its year-round accents.
Plant several as a hedgerow for privacy and property definition, or in the backyard for a small orchard. Great as a small-statured shade tree over your patio and seating areas, or as a shaded anchor to larger garden beds. These are fantastic anywhere they are planted.
A beautiful specimen tree, Comice needs a pollinator to produce the best yield receiving the best pollination in a group of other suitable pears. If you are short on space, try this high-density planting trick in our Garden Blog!
The crunch of this pear and the firmness of its flesh make it ideal for baking, adding to a pear crisp, and baking pies. Its flesh also makes it a great pear for canning, letting you preserve some of your harvest for enjoyment later on in the year.
#ProPlantTips For Care
Hardy in USDA growing zones 4-9, these are full sun trees and do best with morning sun and at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. Adaptable to a range of conditions, this pear tree is easy to love and easy on the eyes too.
Provide ample water for your young tree while it becomes established, not allowing it to dry out between waterings. Then reduce your watering to moderate, yet consistent moisture during the heat of summer and when fruiting. While drought-tolerant, it’s best to protect your investment by providing supplemental watering in times of need.
Preferring rich, well-drained soil and a thick layer of mulch over the root systems surface for moisture retention and insulation from heat and cold.
Situate in an area that is protected from frost pockets and with good air circulation. Prune to keep an open canopy so that both sunlight and airflow reach the interior. Head over to our Garden Blog for more Fruit Tree Planting, Fruit Tree Pruning and Fruit Tree Care tips and tricks can be found!

Wonderfully Sweet Dessert Comice Pear
After the Bartlett pear, there is no pear more recognizable in the United States than the Comice Pear. Also referred to as the Christmas Pear, this is most attributed to the Harry and David Company and their years of offering the Royal Riviera Comice pear in their gift boxes. Since 1932, Harry and David's Bear Creek Orchards of the Rogue River Valley have been growing and selling this United States favorite.
The Royal Riviera pear is simply a Comice pear, but it may find an ideal climate in the Rogue River Valley of Southern Oregon. The Comice pears grown there are consistently of the finest quality and rate as some of the best pears grown in the United States.
But the Comice pear has a long history as a favorite of the Europe and the Americas. It was first fruited in Anger France at the Horticultural Society of Maine et Loire in 1849. It was considered a truly high-flavored desert quality fruit right away.
First introduced as Doyenne du Comice, it made its way into England by Sir France Dyke Acland in 1858, where it fast became recognized as one of the finest desert pears. After that point, it quickly made its way to most major pear growing regions world-wide.
The Comice pear is still a number one choice for fresh eating but has become a home garden favorite in more recent years. Pears must be picked at the right time to get the maximum flavor in storage. Commercially, Comice can be picked too early. This will result in a pear that ripens with less sugar, a trait so important to a fine quality Comice Pear.
Today, Comice is still the choice of many a fruit gift pack grower. The attention by these grower/packers is focused on the proper timing for harvest to insure the finest quality fruit to your table. With a Comice pear tree in the backyard, the same attention is paid to picking your fruit, although now the whole crop is yours and each piece is picked just right so that each fruit is as good as the last.
