Growing Zones
Dark and gothic-looking deep berry hues, the Orfeo Dahlia (Dahlia 'Orfeo') is a Cactus-type Dahlia with incredible round pom-poms of fuchsia-highlighted petals! Growing up to six inches wide, these magnificent heirloom blooms are sure to stand out dramatically in your landscape!
Pollinators will be drawn in near and far to sip nectar, hummingbirds will stop by for a visit, and curious neighbors will strike up conversations all summer long when you plant this huge Dahlia variety! The blooms are long-lasting and rebloom until frost if you are a reliable deadheader or have snipped stems regularly for your bouquets indoors!
Bred in Holland and a fan-favorite for nearly 70 years, not only does Orfeo have incredible blooms, but these huge flowers stand atop strong stems that can reach up to 4-5 feet in height! Their 2-3 foot wide foliage mounds are filled with lush glossy green leaves that look great all on their own!
Landscape Application:
A must-have for the sun garden and back of the border, Orfeo Dahlia stands tall and sturdy among other shrubs, perennials, and Rose bushes without overtaking its neighbors. It will certainly show off!
Plant yours among the mixed perennial garden, as a tall backdrop with Hollyhocks in the proper English Cottage garden, in rows along a white picket fence, or as part of a larger Dahlia garden where it will stand head and shoulders above the rest of your collection!
Orfeo Dahlia can even be potted up in large planters as a specimen planting or thriller in large raised bed gardens! That means patios, poolside pots, and front porches gain a showy specimen, and balcony gardeners can still enjoy these magnificent blossoms!
- Huge Berry-Hued Cactus Style Dahlia Blooms!
- Lush Green Foliage & Strong Stems Up To 6 Feet Tall
- Very Tall Strong Stems & Leafy Green Foliage
- Flowers All Summer Til Fall
- Great For Pollinators & Cut Flower Gardens!
- Focal Points & Specimen Plants, Container Thrillers & Garden Border Accents
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Plant Dahlia tubers in full sun for the best growth and the most blooms! The morning sun is best due to its drying power to clear the leaves of dew. Delicate Dahlia foliage also appreciates afternoon shade in hot climates and everywhere they love good air circulation! The key to successfully growing Dahlias is well-enriched soil with regular fertilizer. It is recommended that you add 3-4 inches of arborist bark mulch for consistent soil moisture and protect the roots.
Even though they are often referred to as 'bulbs' the roots of the Dahlia are tubers like potatoes and sprout from the 'eyes'. Plant Dahlia tubers between 10-12 inches deep in loosened, enriched soil. These modified roots need to be planted in very well-drained soil that won't become soggy. Tubers planted directly in the ground will start to sprout in about 3 weeks depending on your climate and weather.
Deadhead regularly for continuous rebloom and trim back yellowed foliage in the fall. Dig up the tubers for the winter. Store these bulbs in a cool, dark place for the winter.
Forming from bulb-like tubers, these perennials need protection from freezing temperatures. While Dahlia can be planted in all growing zones, climates with cold winters need to "lift" the tubers in the fall before the ground freezes.
- Full Sun & Partial Shade
- Well-Drained Rich Soil
- Tolerates Moderate to Moist Locations
- Prune After Foliage Yellows & Lift Tubers In Fall
- Easy-To-Grow Tubers With Multiple Eyes Each
