All eyes will be drawn to their glamorous, whiskered red eyes. Think the fresh-faced charm of Grace Kelly meets the sultry wiles of Cleopatra, and you'll get a sense of these beguiling blooms. Butterflies, Hummingbirds, and bees will certainly take notice and appreciate the addition of these large flowers to your yard!
Rose of Sharon starts blooming in summer and goes and goes through fall. Their reputation as easy-care plants is totally warranted, and make a perfect choice for beginners. Showy at a distance, and engaging up close, Orchid Satin® is a field-tested selection from the Proven Winners® ColorChoice® team. The prolific, large orchid-pink single blooms produce very few if any, seeds.
However, they do produce nectar. You'll enjoy watching the beautiful hummingbirds and butterflies lavish attention on these valuable low-maintenance resources. Best of all, you'll get a chance to study the flowers, each accented by a dramatic red eye. The canopy is held high on a standard trunk! No bending or squatting is required. The bright green foliage is held lushly on graceful branches. The densely held foliage of this tree-form flowering shrub makes it a nice privacy screen if you need it to serve "double duty".
Planting and Application:
Also known as Althea, and related to Tropical Hibiscus, these are just as brilliant and easy to grow as their cousins! These perky plants are very versatile! Use one as a very special focal point in an outdoor Meditation Garden, or add a row of five of them behind your patio seating. You'll enjoy the dazzling flower display, and rest easy with a boost of welcome privacy and shade. Create an instant "wow" factor by incorporating them into your planting beds and mixed borders.
Try a spicy alternating pattern of the tree form with Purple Pillar® or another Satin® line of Althea in a mulched bed. Choose your favorites, as you really can't go wrong with these tree-form plants. They are such an appealing addition to the mixed plantings in either the front yard or backyard.
Plant them in the ground, or keep them in extra-large containers! Try a pair of them flanking on either side of your front door. Traffic will slow down to check out your curb appeal. Who says you need a yard to grow these spectacular specimens? They'll work just as well on a balcony! Give them regular water, and you'll be absolutely charmed by their cheerful drama.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Help your Althea tree reach its full potential by giving it the proper growing conditions. Plant or place in a full-sun location that gets at least six hours of sunlight a day. Regular water is important, as well. This is especially true for container-grown plants. Mulch helps reduce surface evaporation, but needs to be pulled back all the way around the trunk.
Drip irrigation is a big timesaver! Use soaker hoses, or add tubing fitted with the appropriate nozzles. Use a timer to automate the flow of water. Well-drained soil is important. Elevate in a raised bed if you have poorly drained soil. If you are growing them in a container, look for at least a 20-inch diameter. They'll need plenty of drainage holes. Elevate the pot up on bricks and do not use saucers outdoors. Use a 3-4-inch layer of arborist mulch over the top of the root system to keep them nice and cool both in the ground and in containers.
In exposed and windy locations, consider using a more substantial stake to hold it in place for the first year as the roots get established. In early spring before these plants start to grow, lightly trim the top branches into a uniform, rounded shape. Once the plants are three years old, the canopy should be maintained with regular pruning at about a four-foot rounded ball each year.
Prune Althea in early spring to either shape or control the height. You'll have flowers later that season, no matter how tightly you trim them in spring. You can even train these shrubs into multi or single-stemmed tree forms! Renewal prune every 3-5 years to maintain vigor. Fertilize in early spring, as well. Make sure you get a formula for flowering plants. Keep nitrogen-rich lawn fertilizer well away from your Rose of Sharon tree form plant. Although Rose of Sharon is usually deer resistant, we do recommend repellent sprays. Reapply according to the directions on the label.

Tree Form vs. Shrub Form
The details make all the difference in a garden. At Naturehills.com, we understand that little things like what form a plant is can greatly impact how you plan your landscape. So before you buy, don't forget to check which form you're getting.
Tree Form:
These are plants that have one stem coming from the ground. Plants can also be considered single stem when lower branches are removed to raise the height of the branching to a more desired height. Sometimes, you will hear a tree form referred to as a single stem.
Shrub Form:
These are bushy plants with many stems and branchings close to the ground. They are referred to as shrubs or bushes and are often shorter than their tree forms.
