For the best results, site Ruby™ October Magic® Camellia where it will receive at least four hours of sunlight each day, preferring morning sun and afternoon shade throughout USDA growing zones 7 to 9. Camellias don't like standing water, so mound up if your soil isn't well-drained. Tolerant of periodic drought only after the roots are established, give supplemental water the first season and during long periods of dry weather. You may never need to prune Ruby, but if you do...do it in early spring before the first flush of flowers. Fertilize with a good Acid Lovers formula in early spring, following directions for application rates and reapplication schedule. Apply deer repellent on the day you plant and reapply according to the label directions, if they regularly visit your yard. Finally, apply a layer of pine bark mulch over the top of the root system but never directly touching the stems.
