Have you always wanted to have a pecan tree in your yard, but felt like you might be a little too far north for any real success? Well, don't worry about it anymore. Oconee is the tree for you. Pecan lovers rejoice! The Oconee Pecan Tree (Carya illinoinensis 'Oconee') gives you large crops of very tasty, fancy Pecans down to zone 6 where many Pecan Trees would just shiver the nights away!
The Oconee Pecan is an impressive tree that will give you bushels of delectable nuts starting as soon as it's 5th year! Sweet and savory with a unique flavor, this thin-skinned Papershell variety! Since it starts producing very young you can expect many years of big harvests every October. For the biggest yield, plant this Type I Pecan with a Type II like the Stuart Pecan for increased pollination.
Oconee produces a lot of nuts - 48 nuts per pound on average and these aren't just any nuts, these are some of the easiest shelling pecans around. People say that you get more intact halves from these nuts than from most other Pecan Trees. Oconee was introduced in 1989 - a good year for music, hair, clothes, and MTV as well as Pecans!
Planting and Application:
Incredible shade trees and lawn specimens, groves of Oconee with other Pecans create lush groves and naturalized cooling shade that saves you money for cooling costs. You'll love the edible landscaping possibilities these lovely nut trees provide! Plant it as a welcome addition to a food forest or for all walks of wildlife!
This native tree has admirers in the natural world and provides habitat to many species of wildlife and Host Plants to multiple varieties of moth larvae. The spreading strong branches are ideal for use in windbreaks and shelterbelts!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Plant Pecan Trees in a spot in full sun for best results. When you do your tree planting, plan to give a moderate amount of regular water during the first season and consistent moisture in a site with rich, well-drained soils. Provide trees with a thick layer of mulch over the root system to help during drought, and to keep the area under the canopy clear for easy nut harvest. These trees can be drought-tolerant once established and thrive in the heat and humidity of the southeastern US best. Prune if needed when dormant.
- Full Sun Trees
- Well-Drained Soil
- Moderate Yet Regular Moisture
- Appreciates Mulched Beds
- Prune When Dormant
