The popular grape with tiny seeds, the Niagara Grape Vine (Vitis labrusca 'Niagara') is a flavorful fruit that is commonly used for wines, champagnes, jams, jellies and juice! Introduced in 1868, Niagara has a very sweet taste that makes it perfect to serve fresh on the table as well!
Niagara Grapes are the leading Green Grape Vines grown in the United States. Most American consumers recognize the Niagara as the source of most white Grape juice. The Niagara Grapes are full of vitamins and antioxidants that help keep us healthy! Homegrown Grapes are fresher and generally taste better when picked straight from the Vine!
The Niagara Grapes are very cold hardy, thriving in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 5 to 8, and will produce vigorously for 20 years or more. Bees adore the blooms in the spring, and pollinate these self-fertile vines! Very ornamental and fruitful on their own, but you will have a much larger harvest with multiple plants in the area. Ripening at the beginning of early September, you can install netting or mesh bags over your fruit to keep the birds at bay.
Planting and Application:
Niagara Grapes are climbing and fruiting vines so it's best if they are trained on a trellis, pergolas, fences, arbors, or around patios. This vine looks great on a sturdy arch at the entrance or as a feature of your vegetable, herb, or kitchen garden. You can also create a striking scene with several strung across a Grape arbor, climbing your fence, or on the back wall of your patio, providing screening and privacy along with the delicious fruit!
Let ramble over a fence to hide eyesores beyond and provide privacy throughout the spring until fall. Container gardeners can even plant these in large pots and planters for balcony and small-space edible landscaping! Planting this fruiting Vine over a pergola or arbor creates lovely shade and the feeling that your seating areas or garden benches transport you to Tuscany or that you are having breakfast in a vineyard!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
This Grape hasn't met a sunny spot in the garden it doesn't like! The best planting area for Grapevines is where they receive full sun with good air circulation. Grape Vines require deep, enriched soil that drains well. Excessively wet or dry soils should be avoided. It is best to provide young plants with some wind protection and ensure they have adequate air circulation. Maintaining a pH level of 5.5 to 7.0 is ideal. Provide regular moisture and a 3-4 inch thick mulch layer to support the roots, plus regular fertility. Prune Grapevines should be performed in late winter or early spring to maintain the shape, size, and vigor of next year's fruiting wood.
