Showy, ruffled blooms, the color pink ignites passion and romance and National Beauty Azalea (Rhododendron x 'National Beauty') adorns herself with plentiful pink blossoms in spring. This shrub will definitely turn heads and add a delightful sense of drama to your yard. These blossoms are both elegant and breathtaking. They have ruffled edges that add lovely texture to the overall appearance of this plant.

Although this plant is quite attractive when out of bloom, it's best known for its reputation of producing more blooms than most gardeners can imagine. In early spring, the National Beauty Azalea generates a dense cover of magenta flowers. All while backed by a year-round flush of deep green broad-leaved evergreen foliage!

Don't think you'll be the only one that can't resist loving these vibrant Rhododendrons blooms. Butterflies and Hummingbirds adore them, too! Thriving throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 9, and matures to a fantastic ornamental shrub that's 3-4 feet in height and width.

Planting and Application:

National Beauty would create a heavenly elegance beneath a Live Oak tree canopy, or along your garden beds and borders as a backdrop. If you want to inspire your neighbors, you can even plant a row of these and let them flourish into the perfect, petite privacy hedge. Hide eyesores and block nosy neighbors from your outdoor seating areas. This stunner would light up your woodland garden with its pop of pink in the spring. Plant a few around the edge of the woods that border your yard.

Or dapple your yard with these as low-maintenance specimen plants for pops of spring color and loads of butterflies and bees seeking a nectar source in the spring. Perennial borders, and Rose gardens, and mixed shrub borders all become pollinator gardens! Create vivid year-round green foundation plantings and add curb appeal to your front entry or front stairs.

#ProPlantTips For Care

National Beauty loves loamy, well-drained soil for the best results and does best in partial shade or part sun. Rhododendrons appreciate morning sun and afternoon shade in hotter climates. Well-drained soil is a must. Remember not to plant these shallow-rooted plants too deeply. Mound them up in a hill of extra soil, leaving an inch or two of the root ball showing. If needed, raise the planting area a bit for good drainage.

You'll then bring a three-inch layer of mulch up around the base of the plant. Last, pull the mulch back away from touching the stems. Water consistently during the first season. Thereafter, you'll want to give them regular deep drinks when the weather gets dry.

As your National Beauty Azalea becomes established, keep its soil moist and pull any weeds that pop up nearby. Prune to shape, but wait until after the blooms are finished! Don't wait too long, as you might accidentally trim off next year's flowers. Weed your plantings regularly. Avoid underplanting near your Rhododendron to give the roots room to spread. Feed with slow-release fertilizer for acid-loving plants.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade & Cold Tolerant
  • Acidic Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate Moisture & Mulched Beds
  • Appreciates Mulch
  • Prune Immediately After Spring Flowers Fade

Azalea and Rhododendron Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the best place to plant Rhododendrons?

Azaleas and Rhododendrons prefer partial shade (both dappled shade all day or morning sun with afternoon shade). Plant in a slightly acidic, consistently moist, enriched, and well-drained soil location for best results. Their shallow roots dislike soggy soil but thrive with a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch over their surface.

How big do Rhododendrons get?

National Beauty Azalea can grow 3-4 feet in height and width, when grown in optimal conditions.

Are Rhododendrons low maintenance?

Azalea and Rhododendron shrubs are very easy to grow and low maintenance. Water during drought, prune only after flowering and fertilize with an acid-loving organic, slow-release flowering plant fertilizer.

What is the difference between Rhododendrons and Azaleas?

All Azaleas are Rhododendrons but not all Rhodondendrons are Azaleas. Azalea tends to be smaller-sized with smaller leaves and stems, while Rhododendrons can be larger with stout branching and larger bloom trusses. There can both be either deciduous or broad-leaved evergreens.
