Planning a new landscape, or revising an older design? Rely on Mrs. G. G. Gerbing Azalea (Rhododendron indica 'Mrs. G. G. Gerbing') to provide screening, style, and evergreen structure. Enjoy a dreamy springtime with the help of the huge, pure white blooms that cover the shrub from top to bottom. In bloom, these robust shrubs resemble a living slice of wedding cake!
This is a large, upright, rounded landscape shrub with a fine texture. This broad-leaved evergreen plant brings structure and color all year long. The foliage is densely held all the way to the ground. It makes a perfect screen for the urban landscape! The foliage color is a touch lighter green than other varieties, so it never feels oppressive or dark. Pure white flowers simply pop against the lush foliage.
This outstanding color contrasts beautifully, set as it is against the dark foliage. Long, leathery evergreen Azalea leaves remain green all through the growing season and well beyond. They come to a cute point at the tip. These big boys are so versatile and robust. Their larger size and prolific, reblooming nature will become a standout in your landscape. Heat and humidity-tolerant throughout USDA growing zones 8 to 10, this is a very lovely tropical and hot growing zone flowering ornamental!

#ProPlantTips For Care
Give this variety protection from the hot afternoon sun or provide it with dappled shade all day long. It thrives with at least 4 hours of filtered sunlight a day. Rhododendrons and Azaleas need enriched, slightly acidic, well-drained soil. If you have poor drainage, build a raised bed 18 inches high. Use your native soil with a few handfuls of pine bark soil conditioner and peat moss mixed in. Ensure that your plants receive plenty of air circulation. Don't plant right next to a building, or in a tight corner. Good airflow around each plant helps dry the foliage and reduces the potential for disease.
It is far better to plant Azaleas too high, than too low. Instead, mound them up when planting by leaving a few inches of the root ball showing above the ground. Pull pine bark or pine straw mulch up to cover the root system. Keep your plantings weeded, as Mrs. G. G. Gerbing's shallow roots won't like the competition. We recommend creating a mulched planting bed to make it easy for yourself.
This plant should be watered regularly, and well mulched. The mulch layer will also help keep the ground moist, so plan to reapply it each year. Always pull the mulch back 6 inches from the stems. Apply a good, organic, slow-release fertilizer in early spring according to the product directions. Look for a formula designed for Acid Loving plants.
Prune to correct its shape, if needed, right after the spring flowers begin to fade. Don't wait, as later pruning will threaten your blooms for next spring. We advise allowing your Mrs. G. G. Gerbing Azaleas to grow into an informal, natural shape. You won't want to miss a single bloom!
- Prefers Partial Shade
- Low Maintenance in Slightly Acidic Well Drained Soil
- Moderate Moisture & Mulched Beds
- Prune Immediately After Spring Flowers Fade
- Appreciates Mulched Beds
You'll be surprised how much Mrs. G.G. Gerbing Azalea brightens your landscape. Order from our expert growers today! You'll never regret this classic choice.
Azalea and Rhododendron Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the best place to plant Rhododendrons?
Azaleas and Rhododendrons prefer partial shade (both dappled shade all day or morning sun with afternoon shade). Plant in a slightly acidic, consistently moist, enriched, and well-drained soil location for best results. Their shallow roots dislike soggy soil but thrive with a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch over their surface.
How big do Rhododendrons get?
Mrs. G. G. Gerbing Azalea can grow 6-8 feet in height and 4-6 feet in width, when grown in optimal conditions.
Are Rhododendrons low maintenance?
Azalea and Rhododendron shrubs are very easy to grow and low maintenance. Water during drought, prune only after flowering and fertilize with an acid-loving organic, slow-release flowering plant fertilizer.
What is the difference between Rhododendrons and Azaleas?
All Azaleas are Rhododendrons but not all Rhodondendrons are Azaleas. Azalea tends to be smaller-sized with smaller leaves and stems, while Rhododendrons can be larger with stout branching and larger bloom trusses. There can both be either deciduous or broad-leaved evergreens.
