This semi-evergreen beauty features cup-shaped blooms with eight large petals, perfuming the air with a clean, lemony scent from late spring through summer. Large green leaves with silver undersides shimmer in the sunlight, while fall brings showy red seeds that feed local songbirds.

Nature Hills is proud to offer one of the best cultivars of this beloved native tree. Staying compact and narrow, the Moonglow® Sweetbay Magnolia is ideal for today's landscapes - easy care, gracefully balanced in form, and beautiful all year round with smooth, gray bark.

Blooming later than other Magnolias (well after frost danger passes), this variety guarantees an extended display. Sporadic blooms may appear all season long, offering nectar for butterflies and endless opportunities for cut flower arrangements. Roots, bark, and leaves are sweetly fragrant, adding even more sensory appeal. Hardy, heat- and humidity-tolerant, and thriving in wet soils, this tree is a versatile star for modern yards.

  • Planting Time: Best planted in spring or fall for strong root establishment
  • Sun Requirements: Full sun for best blooms - at least 6 hours of direct sunlight

  • Moisture Needs: Keep soil consistently moist when young; established trees tolerate some drought. Always use the Finger Test before watering
  • Mulching: Apply a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch (pine bark or pine straw preferred); pull mulch back 6 inches from trunk
  • Fertilization Needs: Slightly acidic fertilizer or compost; avoid nitrogen-rich lawn fertilizer near roots

Tree Form vs. Shrub Form

The details make all the difference in a garden. At Naturehills.com, we understand that little things like what form a plant is can greatly impact how you plan your landscape. So before you buy, don’t forget to check which form you’re getting.

Tree Form:

These are plants that have one stem coming from the ground. Plants can also be considered single stem when lower branches are removed to raise the height of the branching to a more desired height. Sometimes, you will hear a tree form referred to as a single stem.

Shrub Form:

These are bushy plants with many stems and branches close to the ground. They are referred to as shrubs or bushes and are often shorter than their tree forms.

This tree has not grown a bit. I feel it will start to grow when it finishes settling in.

Hello Bobbie,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your new tree. It’s completely understandable to feel a bit concerned when you don’t see immediate growth, but you’re right—the settling-in period is an important time for your tree’s roots to establish themselves before visible growth resumes. Patience during this phase is definitely key!

If you haven’t already, be sure to keep the soil consistently moist (but not waterlogged) and ensure the tree is planted in an area with appropriate sunlight based on the species. If you’d like, we’re happy to help identify the tree type and provide tailored care tips to help encourage healthy growth going forward.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions—we’re always here to support your gardening journey.

Gorgeous and quick to flourish!

I have had my tree planted for just over 1 year, I’m in Ohio. Today, May 30th I have my first bloom! What a wonderful sight. Gorgeous!I will comment that the leaves on my tree are a much lighter green color than I expected from any Magnolia, but I assume that they will deepen and darken with age, she’s still a very young tree. Don’t expect a dark dramatic color from the start with this one.I have found this tree to be very forgiving and withstands birds perching, dry days and full sun. It did very well through the winter and quickly developed many more leaves this second season when spring began.I can’t wait to see it get larger!

Dear K B.,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience! We’re absolutely delighted to hear that your young magnolia has blossomed beautifully in just over a year, especially after persevering through Ohio’s winter and spring conditions. Your detailed observations about the lighter green leaves are insightful—indeed, many magnolias develop a deeper, richer foliage color as they mature, so you’re spot on in noting the gradual transformation over time.

It sounds like your tree is thriving thanks to the sunny spot you’ve chosen and your attentive care. If you ever want to encourage even more vibrant growth or ensure its ongoing health, we’d be happy to recommend seasonal care tips or mulching techniques that help retain moisture and protect roots. Also, keeping an occasional eye out for drought stress can keep those leaves lush and vibrant through dry days.

We’re excited to see your magnolia’s journey unfold and to support you along the way. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions about feeding, pruning, or how best to nurture this beauty in future seasons!

Bloom on,
