Growing Zones
Cheerful yellow centers of a brilliant pink and white starburst, the Mingus Julie Dahlia (Dahlia 'Mingus Julie') looks like an explosion of color in the summer garden! The huge blooms of this Cactus Dahlia have spiky petals varying from soft pinks and white to hot pink and magenta and every bloom looks a bit different depending on growing conditions!
Flowering all summer and reblooming into the autumn, Mingus Julie not only, brings in hungry bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, but also every neighbor straining their necks to get a better look at these 3-4 foot tall wonders from over the fence!
Easy to grow in all USDA growing zones, use Dahlia as seasonal accents and annual thrillers in pots and planters. Dahlia tubers need dug in the fall and stored for the winter if you live in a cold growing zone where the ground freezes. In frost-free winters, Dahlia can be kept in-ground all year round.
Landscape Application:
Where could you plant such an eye-catching Dahlia? Anywhere and everywhere in the sun of course! A must-have for cutting gardens to fill both your indoor and outdoor world in these dramatic blooms, but also in your front garden beds and mailbox planting to slow traffic passing your house!
Go big with a row of tall Mingus Jule Dahlias along your home's sunny foundation or a narrow pathway with Sunflowers, Hollyhocks, and Delphinium, or as a backdrop behind a mixed perennial border or Rose Garden! The Roses are sure to be green with jealousy!
Want to add some punk to a Cottage garden or something funky to a Children's garden? Go ahead and add these tall wonders with Alliums and Bee Balm for some quirky blooms kids love (and are safe for kids' curious fingers!)
No room in the garden or no yard to begin with? Not to worry! Mingus Julie is a fantastic specimen in pots and planters, and is a stand-out thriller in balcony gardens, porch urns, and patio container gardens!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Plant Dahlia tubers in full sun for the best growth and the most blooms! The morning sun is best due to its drying power to clear the leaves of dew. Delicate Dahlia foliage also appreciates afternoon shade in hot climates and everywhere they love good air circulation! The key to successfully growing Dahlias is well-enriched soil with regular fertilizer. It is recommended that you add 3-4 inches of arborist bark mulch for consistent soil moisture and protect the roots.
Even though they are often referred to as 'bulbs' the roots of the Dahlia are tubers like potatoes and sprout from the 'eyes'. Plant Dahlia tubers between 10-12 inches deep in loosened, enriched soil. These modified roots need to be planted in very well-drained soil that won't become soggy. Tubers planted directly in the ground will start to sprout in about 3 weeks depending on your climate and weather.
Deadhead regularly for continuous rebloom and trim back yellowed foliage in the fall. Dig up the tubers for the winter. Store these bulbs in a cool, dark place for the winter.
Forming from bulb-like tubers, these perennials need protection from freezing temperatures. While Dahlia can be planted in all growing zones, climates with cold winters need to "lift" the tubers in the fall before the ground freezes.
