How to Use Mediterranean White Winter Heath In The Landscape
With great fine-leafed texture and lasting winter color, Heath prefers dry sites and well-drained areas. Rock gardens and dry garden expenses are fitting homes for these tough plants.
Line a driveway or walkway with dark green year-round or let spread around the base of larger trees and shrubs without worry about root competition.
Slopes and retaining walls really let Mediterranean Heath shine, looking lovely cascading over the edges and rambling down steep, hard-to-mow edges. Great for erosion control!
En masse in drifts display this burst of early-season color and benefit from the steady evergreen and fine texture. Plant along your property edges and skirt wild areas where deer may browse for a barrier they won’t damage. Birds love to take shelter in their dense growth!
Containers and planters gain lovely spillers and blooms around your patios, balconies and porches, allowing you to move and place these unique shrubs anywhere you desire!
Beds and borders look dressed up with a line of these defining their edges. Acting as low groundcover meandering throughout and safely around your larger shrubs.
Cut flower gardens and Cottage gardens are perfect sites for Heath because you’ll love snipping the first few boughs to bring indoors with your forced bulbs and flowering tree branches!
#ProPlantTips For Care
Hardy in USDA growing zones 6 through 8, Heath loves full sun and partial shade, appreciating some afternoon shade in the hotter climates during summer’s worst heat.
Preferring moderate to dry moisture once established, provide just enough water to get established, then these evergreens tolerate any type of very well-drained soil. Plants growing in containers will need more waterings, but be certain your containers have adequate drainage.
They do like a good application of mulch over their root systems to insulate them from heat and cold, as well as provide more consistent soil moisture levels.
Prune lightly only after flowering and do not over-fertilize, Heath generally prefers their soil on the lean side and thriving in acidic soil. For best results, fertilize sparingly with acid-loving plant food to maintain soil pH.
