Growing Zones 4-8
A spectacular North American native tree, the Sierra Lodgepole Pine (Pinus contorta var. murrayana) grows straight and tall. It gives an enormous presence in your landscape, without taking up too much space. Like a tall evergreen punctuation mark in your landscape, these trees can grow upwards of 80 feet in height!
The fine-textured, thinner Pine bark of the trunk is scaly and gray-brown, but will perfume your air with one of the most well-known scents of the West! Native Americans used these trees for their Tipi poles, and you'll capture history by using these at your home.
The dark, yellow-green, shiny needles are pointed and appear in pairs. Its cones are protected by a seal of pitch, and fire or heat is needed to release the seeds, sometimes remaining on the tree for 20 years before conditions are right to release their seeds. Cold-hardy throughout USDA planting zones 4 to 9, these are widely adaptable Pines!
Planting and Application:
Use this tree as an accent, with its strong, slender trunk giving a crisp, clean effect. The narrow, evergreen high canopy moves in the wind to bring additional visual interest to your landscape. For larger properties, consider planting a grove on the outskirts of your visual view. Wind a woodland path between them to recreate the look and feel of the rugged Mountain West.
Use the bold vertical lines to create a vista, which is a magnificent view for you and your guests to enjoy. In a small yard, plant 3 or 5 in a curve well beyond the edge of a seating area or patio where you'll see the sun rise or set through the trees. Long shadows thrown by the canopy across the lawn will add to the evocative visual interest all year round.
Plant a small grove along either side of your entrance drive. The trees will then act as sentries, while easily grounding your landscape and setting the stage for guests to your home. Lodgepole Pines form dense thickets of small trees known as "dog-hair stands", so groupings of these trees work well with each other.
One would make a dramatic shade tree for your yard, or plant several for a quickly established windbreak or privacy screen. Add groupings of Lodgepoles to create a wildlife retreat or make a great choice if you need to create a fast screen. You'll also create an attractive Windbreak in just a few years.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Plant your Lodgepole in full sun locations in well-drained soil. Handling volcanic and poor soil, the Lodgepole Pine thrives in all sorts of environments, from water-logged bogs to dry, sandy soils. Provide new trees with regular deep watering their first year, then after, they can handle drought. However, in times of prolonged drought, it's a good idea to provide supplemental deep watering and a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch to avoid stressing the tree. Give them protection from windy, open exposed sites, and deep winter watering, especially in the coldest growing Zones. Candle prune in the spring, simply break the candle in half before any green needles expand on that new growth.
- Fast Growing In Full Sun
- Highly Adaptable In Most Well-Drained Soil
- Grows in Most Types of Moderate to Low to Moist Soils
- Candle Prune In Spring To Keep Young Trees Compact
- Native Evergreen to the United States
