Planting and Application:

This is an attractive plant for shrub borders and smaller hedges for craving garden nooks and privacy. Not just pollinators and birds, this lovely fragrant bloomer is excellent for cutting too!

The easily managed suckers create colonies of these luscious blooms and foliage that become wonderful shelterbelts for wildlife. Remove them with occasional mowing or let them colonize an area for wind and noise cancellation, creating habitat in out-of-the-way sunny areas, or stopping erosion atop a hard-to-mow hillside that also slows water runoff!

The unusual hue of the blooms makes Marie Francis a wondrous garden accent plant that is sure to stand out when everything else is blue or purple! Amplify that unusual hue by creating groupings, planted in screening rows or planted in mass for a flowering wind screen and bird-friendly shelterbelt that benefits all!

Add a few to your cottage border, behind a perennial garden, and are must-haves to include in the cutting garden for plenty of fresh cuts for bouquets. Don't miss out on the dazzling beauty and alluring scent of the outstanding garden accents. Don't go another spring without a prolific source of fabulous Primrose Lilac blooms!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Marie Francis Lilacs bloom best in full sun and are easily grown in average, medium moist, well-drained soil. Provide moderate moisture consistently all growing season and these shrubs are adaptable to occasional drought when fully established. Mulch helps your plants stay cool and moist, so apply 3-4 inches of arborist bark chips spread out over the roots, but pulled away a few inches from the stems.

Lilacs are disease and deer-resistant so you'll be saved the time and trouble of dealing with costly measures to keep it safe from harm. If you live with deer in your area, apply repellent spray on planting day. Deer are hungry and curious, and you want to train them to leave your plants alone. Reapply according to the label.

Air circulation is important for Lilacs, so find a breezy place for them to perform at their best. It's best to avoid low spots or heavily enclosed locations that trap airflow. Fertilize in early spring and again in mid-summer with Dr. Earth Organic and All Purpose Fertilizer, following directions on the package.

Don't miss a single bloom! Follow these easy Pruning steps for the best flowering:

Prune right after the flowers are done, and don't delay, as Lilacs produce next year's flowers on this year's growth. Deadhead, then remove inward-heading branches and the thickest stems out at ground level. The goal is to let the interior of the shrub have plenty of sunlight and air circulation.

Once your Lilac shrubs are 10 years old, you'll want to start a regular schedule of renewal pruning, and removal of suckers (when needed). After the blooms have faded, cut a few of the oldest, thickest branches right down to the ground each year. The younger, thinner branches remain and keep your plant vigorous and healthy. The youngest branches will produce the best bloom for you the following spring. Prune to keep an open interior to reduce the chances of powdery mildew.
