All Gold Japanese Forest Grass can be a little finicky in transit, so it's good to hear yours arrived in solid shape and are settling in well. Thanks for letting us know, Patrick. If you ever have questions as they fill in, we're here to help.

Growing well right now….

Growing well right now. Winter is arriving soon. Interested in seeing if it survives until spring here at 3550 ft elevation. Zone 6/7

Hi Carol, Thank you for leaving us a lovely review! We are glad to hear that your All Gold Japanes Forest Grass is growing well in your landscape. With winter approaching, we would recommend to leave the old foliage standing throughout the entire winter. The dry, mounded leaves act as natural insulation, protecting the crown of the plant from harsh temperatures and wind. Do not cut it back until you see new growth emerging from the base next spring. Ensure that the plant goes into the deep freeze well-hydrated but not sitting in soggy soil. Consistent moisture during the fall is key to root survival through winter. We look forward to hearing about its success next spring! Thank you - Nature Hills Customer Support

Frequently Asked Questions

What USDA hardiness zones can Lemon Zest™ Japanese Forest Grass survive in?

  • Lemon Zest™ Japanese Forest Grass is hardy in USDA zones 5-9. This perennial grass tolerates both cold winters and warm summers while maintaining its bright golden foliage. Plant it in part shade for best color retention and winter hardiness.

How tall and wide does Lemon Zest™ Japanese Forest Grass get when fully mature?

  • Lemon Zest™ Japanese Forest Grass reaches 1-2 feet both tall and wide at maturity, forming a graceful cascading mound. Its compact size makes it perfect for containers, borders, or tucked under larger shade plants. Shop at Nature Hills for this bright addition to your shade garden.

What type of soil does Lemon Zest™ Japanese Forest Grass need to thrive?

  • Lemon Zest™ Japanese Forest Grass thrives in well-draining, moist soil with organic matter. It adapts to various soil types but performs best in slightly acidic to neutral pH. Amend heavy clay with compost for better drainage, and ensure consistent moisture without waterlogging.

Is Lemon Zest™ Japanese Forest Grass a fast-growing or slow-growing plant?

  • Japanese Forest Grass is generally a slow to moderate grower, typically taking 2-3 years to reach its full 1-2 foot mature size. This steady growth habit makes it low-maintenance and well-behaved in the garden. Be patient with establishment, as the payoff is a long-lived, graceful specimen.

Does this ornamental grass produce flowers, and if so, when do they bloom?

  • Lemon Zest™ Japanese Forest Grass produces delicate, airy panicles in late summer, but they're quite inconspicuous compared to the stunning golden foliage. The real show is the bright yellow cascading leaves that glow in shade all season long. Focus on this grass for its incredible foliage impact rather than floral display when you shop at Nature Hills.

Will deer avoid eating Lemon Zest™ Japanese Forest Grass in my garden?

  • Lemon Zest™ Japanese Forest Grass is deer-resistant, so deer typically avoid browsing on it. The ornamental grass's natural properties make it an unappealing food source for deer. Plant it confidently in areas where deer are frequent visitors to your garden.

How much fertilizer does this grass require during the growing season?

  • Lemon Zest™ Japanese Forest Grass needs minimal fertilization thanks to its low-maintenance nature. A light application of balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring is sufficient for this shade-tolerant perennial. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can reduce the vibrant golden-yellow color and compact 1-2 foot form.

Should I cut back Lemon Zest™ Japanese Forest Grass in fall or spring?

  • Cut back Japanese Forest Grass in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. The foliage provides winter interest and protects the crown from cold damage. Simply trim the entire clump down to 2-3 inches above ground level in March.
