Guava fans go crazy for the Lemon Guava (Psidium littorale var lucidium). This spunky and delightful variety of Guava is considered highly attractive and tart compared to other varieties. If you want a tree or shrub that is fruitful, fragrant, and fun, you need at least one Lemon Guava!
What makes the Lemon Guava so spunky? Each plant has its own unique personality when it comes to fruiting time. Some trees fruit early in summer, while others wait until the end of winter! You’ll be thrilled when you discover your tree’s particular mannerisms!
The Lemon Guava produces petite blooms with puffs of white stamen with yellow tips. These blooms stand out, highlighted against the full green foliage. Resembling white-hot sprays of sparks or fireworks, the blossoms eagerly provide local bees and other beneficial pollinators a landing pad to rest their wings.
Your Guava fruit is ready when the fruit transitions from deep-green to bright-yellow! The Lemon Guava interior features bright yellow flesh. With edible skin, you don't even need a knife to enjoy this yummy treat! You can bite right into it.
The Lemon Guava features bright acidic notes while still retaining the sweet Guava flavor you know and love. This variety has tiny, edible seeds that are smaller and less noticeable than other Guavas. Lemon Guavas are about 2 inches - the perfect size to enjoy after a large meal.
You can get creative when it comes to using your large harvests of Lemon Guavas! Dice for fruit salads, flavor water, churn into ice cream, or mix into your favorite yogurt. The sizeable crop allows you to give these as gifts, jams, jellies, and various sweet and savory recipes! Try some Lemon Guava lemonade!
How to Use Lemon Guava Tree In The Landscape
In their natural state, these trees have a shrubby appearance, so make the most of this form by planting several Lemon Guava, or several Guava varieties, as a privacy hedge. Play with the spacing or groups for a unique screening effect.
You can add height and dimension to your landscape with a Lemon Guava as a background tree or shrub, highlighting your smaller shrubs and creating a backdrop to set them off against. Plus, the Guava casts cooling shade over your garden beds!
Try creating an outdoor room with these luscious fruit trees by planting them in rows or an allée to block out an unwanted view. You’ll enjoy this unusual fruit, botanically considered a berry, for easy snacking that’s within arms reach!
Remove the lower limbs of your Guava and expose the stem for a tree-form ornamental. This exposes the mottled bark and raises the spreading canopy to display a picturesque form within the landscape. This creates a unique and tropical specimen tree for both front and back yard landscaping!
Use as a fantastic shade tree for your seating areas or to adorn the side of your home’s foundation plantings and softening the architecture of your home or outbuildings.
#ProPlantTips For Care
Keep your Lemon Guava happy by planting in full sun. This sunny delight performs best with medium to high moisture, and in well-drained soil. If you are in an arid region or in the hottest of this tree’s preferred growing zones, Guava tolerates afternoon shade.
Guava trees grow in enriched soil with ample fertility to support the fast growth of this exotic tree! Fertilize 2-3 times a year for the best health! These sub-tropical trees thrive in the hot and humid USDA hardiness zones 9 through 11.
Requiring ample water throughout flowering and fruiting seasons. Guava does need cold protection and can be grown in a greenhouse or very sunny window indoors for Northern gardeners, or to keep these as potted plants.
Pruning as small as needed to be easily manageable and reach your harvest. This also allows gardens of all sizes to accommodate their own Guava!
