#ProPlantTips for Care

Best in full sun, plant this Maple in well-drained soil and regular moisture until they are established. Provide a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch and be sure to prune your tree in the late winter after the sap has run.

The Legacy® is fast-growing for a Sugar Maple. It can reach up to 60 feet in height with a 50-foot spread to its dense, oval crown. The leathery leaves and durable foliage resist heat and drought, and it's among the most shade-tolerant of the large deciduous trees. This Maple is easy to grow and does not require much maintenance. It's salt-tolerant and thus performs well in some urban environments as well.

Slow to establish, leaf out

I live in the Great Basin region at the toe of the Rocky Mountains, USDA zone 3-5. We planted our Legacy 5 years ago, and it has been fairly "dormant" until this year: last tree in our area to leaf out, one of the first to drop leaves. It is definitely not a fast grower in this location. The species was suggested by our local urban forestry department, which has great hope the species will prove to be drought tolerant in our dry region. I would suggest that you carefully consider your climate before selecting this tree, and have lots of patience.

Dear Mark,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughtful experience with your Legacy® Sugar Maple Tree. We truly appreciate you taking the time to provide such detailed feedback—especially given your unique growing conditions at the foot of the Rockies in USDA zone 3-5. It’s very valuable to hear real-world insights from customers like you.

You’ve made a great point about the tree’s slow establishment and leaf-out pattern in a dry, challenging environment. Legacy® Sugar Maples are known to be more cold-hardy and drought-tolerant than some maples, but these stressors can definitely slow growth and affect seasonal timing. We love that you’re partnering with your local urban forestry experts—they are an excellent resource when selecting species suited for your regional climate. Continuing to give your Legacy® steady care (deep, infrequent watering during dry spells, mulch to maintain soil moisture, and ensuring good soil drainage) can really help improve its health and longevity over time.

If you haven’t already, you might find it helpful to explore some additional local extension office resources or forums focused on high-desert planting tips—there are some fantastic seasonal care approaches that thrive in areas like yours. And most importantly: thank you for your patience as this tree establishes its place in your garden. With your continued care, it should gradually reward you with its beauty and resilience.

Hello MarkV,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your detailed experience with the Legacy® Sugar Maple Tree. We truly appreciate your candid feedback and the thoughtful insights you’ve provided about growing this tree in the Great Basin region’s challenging conditions.

Given your USDA zone is 3-5 and the dry conditions near the Rocky Mountains, it’s understandable that the tree might be slower to establish and leaf out later than expected. Sugar Maples typically prefer slightly moister environments, so your urban forestry department’s hope for drought tolerance is definitely promising—even if it requires patience. It’s wonderful to hear that your tree is still managing to adapt and survive despite those stresses.

If you continue supporting its care with deep, infrequent watering and extra mulch to conserve moisture, it might just edge toward stronger growth in the future. You might also explore resources about sugar maples suited for colder or drier climates, or companion plantings that can help improve soil moisture retention. Our plant care guides and local extension services can be great places for additional tips tailored to zone 3-5.

Thanks again for your valuable contribution—your experience helps others make well-informed choices and shows the resilience sometimes required in gardening.

Rooting for your garden’s success,

A generous and forgiving tree...

This is a type of tree my great-grandfather planted just about everywhere! There are trees growing to this day on farms and in yards and along small town streets. Several of them have even survived ruthless LG&G *pruning* that resulted in tree-murder to other species. This tree is grows fast, adds excellent shade and when situated properly, can help with utility bills..for when it loses its leaves in the fall, then sunlight can warm a house. And it makes a lovely sound when wind blows through it.

Dear Playpretty,

Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful reflection on the Legacy® Sugar Maple Tree! It's heartwarming to hear about the deep, multi-generational connection your family has with this magnificent tree. We completely agree—its fast growth, generous shade, and seasonal leafy freedom make it a thoughtful choice that pairs well with both function and charm. Plus, its resilience, especially through some harsh pruning conditions, genuinely speaks to the hardiness of the variety.

We also love how you mentioned the subtle benefits it provides with seasonal shading and sunlight in colder months—that kind of informed planting smartly blends horticulture with home comfort. For others looking to replicate this experience, selecting a planting spot that maximizes morning sun exposure yet allows shade in warmer afternoons is a great tip. Additionally, ensuring a balanced pruning routine can help protect your sugar maple’s longevity and beauty, avoiding any stress that harsh pruning might cause.

If you have any questions on feeding or further care strategies to keep your trees thriving through varying seasonal weather, we’re always here to help!

Wishing you happy planting,
The Nature Hills Plant Experts
