Bright pops of color over silvery variegated foliage, the Purple Chablis Lamium (Lamium maculatum 'Purple Chablis'), also going by the common name Dead Nettle or Spotted Deadnettle, is a stellar groundcover!
These low-growing mats of silver and green leaves are made all the better by the abundance of wine-purple, Turtle-head-like flowers that float above the foliage sporadically during the spring and summer! Bees and butterflies will also be fluttering over the blooms as well!
This sweet perennial only grows a foot high but spreads two feet or more throughout USDA planting zones 4 to 8. It stays green in even the hottest weather and makes sunny areas cooler and shady areas brighter. Several will cover a large area quickly, smothering weeds and resisting deer with ease.
Planting and Application:
Use as a filler in containers for a wonderful foliage accent! Use Lamium as spillers and fillers in hanging baskets, mixed containers, and window boxes, allowing the silvery foliage to trail over the edges, acting as a flowering spiller and filler! It nicely makes an excellent specimen and front-of-the-garden accent planting and looks great among variegated perennials, and silver foliage plants!
Smothering weeds and filling large areas fast, Lamium are lovely flowering groundcovers! In the garden, Lamium beautifully spills over the edge and softens the corners of your hardscapes if you let it! Try alternating Purple Chablis with Pink Chablis Lamium for a wave of pretty silver pastels in your Cottage garden and Moon Garden!
Pretty edging and facer plants, for a really unforgettable look, plant Waterslide Hosta in the middle of a group of Purple Chablis, or mix this low-grower with purple foliage plants, or ramble among Ferns to light up the shady understory. They will play off each other in color and form and we guarantee it will be traffic-stopping!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
This versatile plant will grow well in part sun or shade. Lamium prefers a semi-shady dry area with well-drained soil, but will tolerate a wide range of soils and moisture. Plant these herbaceous perennials in well-drained soil and do not allow them to dry out, covering the roots with 3-4 inches of mulch to keep the roots moist and insulated. It is best to cut this plant back after the first bloom to promote compact growth. Deer won't bother it, so if you're tired of having the neighborhood salad bar, then this might be your answer!
