The most cold-hardy Citrus tree you can buy! Marumi Kumquat (Fortunella japonica 'Marumi') is a breeding breakthrough and a boon for gardeners, especially those in colder northern climates

If you can say the word 'Kumquat' and not instantly have your mouth start watering, then you've never tasted these little sour/sweet powerbombs. Kumquats are small l- no bigger than a golf ball, often as small as a half dollar - but they pack a BIG Citrus taste. You usually pop the whole thing in your mouth and eat it peel and all. Sweet peel and tart pulp, combine as you chew for a unique flavor explosion.

Marumi Kumquat has small leaves and round fruit with thin, sweet skin that is edible. No need to peel. These trees do great in pots by a sunny window so that you can pick a few Kumquats to snack on at any time. They start producing in late fall and by Christmas, you can have boughs of greenery with natural orange 'ornaments'.

Planting and Application:

Beautiful ornamentals, Marumi Kumquats are diminutive trees that tuck into any sized yard, orchard or even porch and balcony! Even those without any space outside can enjoy them in their homes as tropical houseplants. Any sunny location will provide you with a beautiful tree and lots of fruit!

Plant in the ground as a beautiful specimen tree and an exotic addition to your backyard seating areas! Plant a pair by your front door for a sweet welcome and unique conversation piece! Easy-care trees like these always make incredible gifts too!

  • Round orange, sweet fruit
  • Edible peel and all - Preserves, desserts, fruit salads & fresh eating
  • Great in containers
  • Ornamental broadleaf-evergreens & white fragrant blooms
  • Thoughtful gift plant

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Of all Citrus - Marumi Kumquats survive the lowest temperatures. They often don't show any damage even when the temps get down to 10 degrees. At 0-degrees they will lose their leaves, but by spring, the leaves will grow back! This winter dormancy is pretty remarkable and unheard of in other citrus trees.

Protecting Container Citrus From Cold

Although it's famous for growing in warmer regions, it can also thrive in colder areas as long as the tree is brought indoors prior to the first frost of winter.

If you're growing these tropical trees in the ground in the lowest of their favored growing zones, they need to be planted in a sheltered spot to avoid the worst of the chill. If a spot like that is unavailable, then you are better off planting in a large, deep container.

In borderline growing zones, begin slowly acclimating your tree indoors or into a protected location, eventually moving your tree inside in bright indirect sun for the winter if the temperatures in your area ever dip below that 40°F range. In spring, reverse this process and begin acclimating your tree to again be back out in the full sun all summer. This reduces stress and leaf drop.

Fertilizer

Do I use a citrus fertilizer and could you tell me the best way to fertilize and how often. Thanks, Jennie

Hi Jennie,

Thank you so much for reaching out and for your question about fertilizing your Marumi Kumquat Tree! We truly appreciate you trusting us with your plant care journey.

For your delicious citrus, using a fertilizer formulated specifically for citrus trees is definitely the way to go. These fertilizers provide the right balance of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and essential micronutrients tailored for citrus health and vibrant growth. We suggest feeding your Kumquat Tree about three times a year — typically in early spring, mid-summer, and early fall. When applying, follow the package instructions carefully and be sure to water the tree after fertilizing to help nutrients absorb efficiently.

Additionally, kneading a 2–3 inch layer of organic mulch around the base can help retain moisture and provide some slow-release nutrients. If your Kumquat tree is grown indoors or in a container, fertilizers may need to be applied more frequently, around every 6–8 weeks during the growing season, to compensate for limited soil nutrients.

If you'd like, we can also recommend some specific citrus fertilizers or additional care tips based on your growing environment! Feel free to reach back with any more questions.

Fertilizer

Do I use a citrus fertilizer and could you tell me the best way to fertilize and how often. Thanks, Jennie

Hi Jennie,

Thank you so much for reaching out and for caring so much about your Marumi Kumquat Tree! You’re absolutely right—using a fertilizer formulated for citrus trees is ideal because it provides the balanced nutrients your Kumquat needs for healthy growth and fruiting.

For best results, look for a citrus-specific fertilizer with a balanced N-P-K ratio, often around 6-6-6 or something similar, that also includes micronutrients like magnesium and iron. During the growing season—which is typically from early spring through late summer—apply fertilizer every 6 to 8 weeks according to the product instructions. In cooler months, you can reduce or pause feeding, as your tree's growth naturally slows down.

Be sure to water your tree well after applying fertilizer to help the roots absorb the nutrients. Also, sprinkling organic mulch around the soil can help retain moisture and provide steady nourishment.

If you want, I can send over recommended fertilizer brands and care tips specifically suited for Marumi Kumquat Trees. Just let us know!

Wishing you happy planting,
