There's only one way to accurately describe the Java Blue Tall Bearded Iris (Iris germanica 'Java Blue') and that's blue, blue, and blue! This excellent Iris is as blue as they come and a sight to behold. Its dramatic ruffles and lovely scent make it one of the most dignified and graceful Irises you will find. And did we mention it's perfect blue?
So, the Java Blue Iris is blue, but it's not just any ordinary blue. It is the most placid and pretty marine blue. Its monochromatic coloration highlights its exquisite form. From its blue and fuzzy beard to its wide ruffled edges this Iris makes an impact in mid-spring when it announces the arrival of its azure blooms.
This Tall Bearded Iris grows 33 inches in height when in bloom, and the sword-like vertical foliage spreads into leafy clumps 12 - 18 inches wide! Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 3 to 9, this saturated deep blue bloom sparkles in the sunlight!
Planting and Application:
You'll want to keep your camera handy when the Java Blue is blooming. Butterflies and bees love it just as much as you will. And with its amazing color, it makes for some incredible photos! Plus planting a few extra will ensure they have plenty of nectar while you enjoy plenty of elegant blossoms for your floral bouquets!
Plant this blue bombshell where you can admire its flowers and its splendid scent. Create a landscape Monet would be proud of with drifts of Java Blue Iris throughout your landscape, along your driveway, or a pathway. Get playful and plant some by the sidewalk and mailbox for passersby to appreciate too. Great backdrops, edging, and facer plants anywhere in the sun!
Because of its ability to thrive in low-moisture soil, it also makes a dramatic addition to your Rock garden where its low moisture needs once established can be appreciated. Consider using this stunner as a one-of-a-kind border or as a spectacular mixed planter thriller! A radiant feature in your mixed Perennial, Border Garden, or Cottage garden.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Be sure you provide your Java Blue Iris with well-drained soil and partial shade (afternoon shade) to full sun. Like other Iris varieties, you'll want to plant them with their roots straddling a mound of soil and covering them two-thirds of the way up the rhizome. Provide a regular supply of moisture their first year and during extended drought, applying 3-4 inches of arborist mulch around their root systems; Bearded Iris are actually drought tolerant once established!
Divide every few years and it's recommended you deadhead after the flowers fade. Trim all the foliage back in the autumn once it yellows and cover the rhizomes loosely with compost, mulch, or evergreen boughs for the winter. Deer, Rabbits, and Squirrels seldom eat these perennials or their rhizomes.
Information About Bare Root Iris
Bare root Iris are shipped as nice fresh-cut divisions with two to three fans of green tops. Keep in mind each Iris variety can have slightly different-sized roots.
Be sure to set your Iris up for success by planting it in the fall in a shallow hole with a hill of soil at its center. Place the rhizome on the mound and bury it two-thirds of the way up, leaving the top of the rhizome exposed. Note, that it's best to cover the rhizome with a thin layer of mulch or leaves to protect it during the coldest months but make sure to uncover it in the spring.
