Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Five-foot wide clumps of frost on cream, the Sagae Hosta (Hosta 'Sagae') displays frosty green leaves with creamy yellow margins that form very impressive, large clumps. Also known as Plantain Lily, Sagae is one of our favorites and an incredibly easy-going, long-lived Hosta!

Sagae is considered to be the most dramatic variegated Hosta ever introduced featuring an impressive semi-upright mound. Plants mature into breathtaking specimens reaching grand widths! With very heavy, visual substance and good slug resistance, Sagae provides pale, lavender flowers on 34-inch tall scapes in mid-summer.

Previous winner of numerous awards including - Trophy Award, Benedict Award, and American Hosta Growers Society Hosta of the Year! Named for an Icelandic saga, Sagae is wonderfully cold-hard, but also heat and humidity tolerant throughout USDA growing zones 3 to 9; perfect for even the most novice gardeners!

Planting and Application:

The lush wide foliage features upright, fountain-like coarse leaves that fill a niche in the shade garden that few other plants can achieve. Impressive specimens and accents, plant feature displays throughout the landscape, or create groupings to highlight feature garden hardscapes, sculptures, and other garden delights!

Sagae is most at home in a shady, woodland setting and works well in cottage gardens, perennial borders, and pollinator gardens alike! Create high-impact edging along beds and borders, or lovely fringe around larger trees and shrubs, hiding their bare leggy stems in lush foliage. The wide-spreading nature means fast coverage of large swaths of ground, for greenery in a hurry!

  • Upright Folded Dark Green Foliage
  • Gold Margin on Leaves
  • Lavender Flowers in Late Summer
  • Butterfly & Pollinator-Friendly
  • Specimens, Beds & Borders, Shade Gardens, Edging & Containers!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Growing best in the part shade/part sun in cooler climates, and full shade in the hottest of its favored climates. Plant Sagae does best in an area that receives morning sun to bring out the best coloration but appreciates afternoon sun. An herbaceous Perennial that grows best in enriched, consistently moist, well-drained soils with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5. Top-dress with a 3 - 4 inch thick layer of arborist mulch over the soil surface, especially in dry shade conditions. Deadhead Hostas as soon as the flowers fade for a tidy look, and in fall when these herbaceous Perennials die back from the cold, it's time to prune the mound clean and remove the dead foliage. Divide your Hosta clumps every 3-5 years to maintain vigor.

  • Full Shade Perennial Also Tolerates Partial Shade
  • Moist Well-Drained Enriched Soil
  • Low-Maintenance & Remarkably Easy Care
  • Deadhead After Flowering & Prune Late Fall After Frost
  • Cold Hardy & Humidity Tolerant

Because it makes such a bold statement, Sagae sells out quickly, so if you want this plant, order it now! Order your own cold-hardy saga-worthy Sagae Hosta today at Nature Hills!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Hostas need full sun or shade?

Hosta does best in full sun in cooler climates but does appreciate afternoon protection from the worst of the summer sun, especially in the hottest of their growing zone range. In the hottest climates, Hosta like partial shade or dappled shade, and some varieties will do great in full shade.

Where do Hostas grow best?

Hosta plants love enriched, well-drained soil that is moderately yet consistently moist throughout the growing season. They appreciate mulched garden beds.

Do Hostas come back every year? Are Hostas a perennial plant?

With vigorous carefree growth, Hostas are herbaceous perennial plants that will return year after year with little maintenance.

What do you do with Hostas in the fall? What do you do with Hostas in the winter?

Hosta leaves will die back after frost but the crowns and roots remain intact and dormant until next spring. Prune back the leaves once they turn brown in the autumn and remove them from the plant's area. For winter protection, add a layer of compost or mulch over the crowns to protect them from the chill.

Do Hosta attract hummingbirds or pollinators?

Hostas are loved by pollinators and hummingbirds! All walks of beneficial pollinators will show up to sip their nectar.
