Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Gardeners already in love with Hostas, in all their varied shades of green, love to invest in standout beauties. But the varied array of colors and sizes means it's hard to stop at just one! Start your own obsession with the lovely Forbidden Fruit Hosta (Hosta 'Forbidden Fruit') is a standout! The leaves are golden yellow with a subtle orange tint in the center and a contrasting wide blue-green margin.

They are extra thick, too, which tends to keep slugs and other shade garden pests moving on to easier leaves to eat. Forbidden Fruit will catch your eye from across the garden, more so if you plant it in big drifts under your shade trees. The tall scapes fill themselves with lavender trumpet-shaped blossoms that bees, butterflies, and Hummingbirds adore!

Very adaptable and cold-hardy perennials, Hosta thrives in USDA growing zones 3 up to 9 where it is very heat and humidity tolerant as well! Little fazes these plants as long as they receive adequate filtered sunlight and moisture. Remarkably easy to grow, even the most novice or busiest of gardeners can find success with these low-maintenance perennial ornamentals!

Planting and Application:

Gardeners are always on the lookout for bright colors to fill shady areas and the top gardeners know that color in shade doesn't often come about in the form of a flowering and foliage plant One of the best plants for clear color and sheer power of coverage is the shade-loving Hosta. It only takes a few to fill up a shady bed and cover unsightly bare ground or leggy perennials.

Accent any structure, seating area, or sculptural with a curved row or skirting of these hefty plants around the base. Loving the shade that larger trees and shrubs create, a skirt or ring of Hosta around their bases adds a finishing touch to your plantings while hiding their bare leggy lower stems as lush facer plants. Cottage borders, perennial gardens, and pollinator beds are all highlighted by the Forbidden Fruit Hosta and its two-tone leaves!

It would be sinful not to order these for your garden, especially if you have a troublesome shady spot. Forbidden Fruit looks best in groups of three or more, so order plenty! Pairing wonderfully with other shade-loving plants like the finely-textured Fern or Astilbe, the cool blue hue goes great with the vivid colors of Coral Bells too!

  • Striking Bright Yellow-Green With Darker Blue-Green Margins
  • Tall Yet Narrow Fountain Shaped Growth
  • Mounding Rounded Form
  • Hummingbirds & Pollinators Galore!
  • Edging, Shade Gardens, Beds & Borders & Containers

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Highly filtered or dappled sunlight is necessary for lush, healthy growth, and the morning sun is tolerable and helps to intensify the leaf colors, but the hot afternoon sun is usually deadly to Hostas! Highly resistant to heat and humidity long as they're given adequate shade and moisture, especially throughout the hottest part of the growing season. Tolerant of dry shade once established, these become incredibly resilient! Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained soils that are highly organic. Preferring a pH between 5.5 and 7.5. A generous 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch chips helps retain soil moisture as well as insulate the root system from heat and chill.

Low maintenance and easy care, there's not much work for you! Once frosts arrive, Hosta is an herbaceous perennial that dies back to the ground and emerges again in early spring. Be sure to remove dead leaf matter from the area to prevent the spread of fungal issues and deter slugs. But it has excellent slug resistance and no disease issues!

  • Part Sun & Partial Shade
  • Moderate to Moisture Loving Plant
  • Excellent Slug & Snail Resistance
  • Very Cold Hardy & Humidity Tolerant & Easy Care & Vigorous Growth
  • Prune In Late Fall

So pretty in the garden, it's almost a sin! Once you start growing Hostas it's kind of hard to stop. They are so beautiful and so easy to care for! Order your own Forbidden Fruit Hosta and start down the road towards your own Hosta collection with the help of Nature Hills Nursery!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Hostas need full sun or shade?

Hosta does best in full sun in cooler climates but does appreciate afternoon protection from the worst of the summer sun, especially in the hottest of their growing zone range. In the hottest climates, Hosta like partial shade or dappled shade, and some varieties will do great in full shade.

Where do Hostas grow best?

Hosta plants love enriched, well-drained soil that is moderately yet consistently moist throughout the growing season. They appreciate mulched garden beds.

Do Hostas come back every year? Are Hostas a perennial plant?

With vigorous carefree growth, Hostas are herbaceous perennial plants that will return year after year with little maintenance.

What do you do with Hostas in the fall? What do you do with Hostas in the winter?
