These small Hostas have a very striking appearance! The Fire Island Hosta (Hosta 'Fire Island') has color that doesn't quite! The bright lemony chartreuse hue extends into the base of the leaves for a wonderful contrast. In the summer, the foliage darkens a bit but it will still light up the shade garden gloom!

Fire Island is a vigorous grower that features heart-shaped, quilted, and textured foliage with elegant pointed tips. Forming mounds of fountain-like color, these are among the easiest perennials to care for! Lavender blooms top the clump in summer upon tall scapes that the butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds seek out for their nectar! You'll love the blooms as lovely cut flowers for your bouquets.

Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 3 to 9, Fire Island is cold, heat, and humidity tolerant, and maintains the ease of care that the Hosta family embodies! Busy gardeners and novice gardeners find success with these vibrant perennials!

Planting and Application:

Hosta are most at home in shady, woodland settings and often work well as specimen or edging plants. The vibrant color lights up the shade and dappled understory beneath trees and large shrubs as a vivid skirting of foliage. Line your shaded garden beds and border edges with a fringe of lemony foliage ornamentals! Loving the shade that larger trees and shrubs create, a skirt or ring of Hosta around their bases adds a finishing touch to your plantings while hiding their bare leggy lower stems as lush facer plants.

Hosta even does fine in a well-drained container. Order several Fire Island Hostas to add a shot of color to your covered porches and patios, shaded seating areas, and even protected balconies! Mix with other Hosta leaf colors, create a cool background structure, or highlight shrubs and trees with this unique coloration!

  • Bright Lemony Chartreuse Leaves
  • Small Mounding Tidy Form
  • Lavender Blooms on Tall Scapes
  • Cut Flowers & Pollinator-Friendly
  • Shade Gardens, Beds & Borders, Edging & Containers!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

This low-care herbaceous Perennial is ideal for shady positions. High-filtered or dappled sunlight is necessary for clean, healthy growth. The morning sun is tolerable and will help to intensify the leaf colors, but the hot afternoon sun is usually deadly to Hostas. Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained, highly organic soils with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5. Sandy loam is better than clay because it provides more aeration for the roots. Add a 3-4 inch thick layer of arborist mulch to the soil surface, especially in dry shade conditions. Deadhead Hostas as soon as the flowers fade for a tidy look, and in fall when these herbaceous Perennials die back from the cold, it's time to prune the mound clean and remove the dead foliage. Divide your Hosta every 3-5 years to maintain vigor.

  • Full Shade Perennial Also Tolerates Partial Shade
  • Moist Well-Drained Enriched Soil
  • Low-Maintenance & Remarkably Easy Care
  • Deadhead After Flowering
  • Prune Late Fall

Bright chartreuse in a powerful but small package! These small Hostas have a very striking appearance, so hurry and reserve your Fire Island Hosta today at Nature Hills!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Hostas need full sun or shade?

Hosta does best in full sun in cooler climates but does appreciate afternoon protection from the worst of the summer sun, especially in the hottest of their growing zone range. In the hottest climates, Hosta like partial shade or dappled shade, and some varieties will do great in full shade.

Where do Hostas grow best?

Hosta plants love enriched, well-drained soil that is moderately yet consistently moist throughout the growing season. They appreciate mulched garden beds.

Do Hostas come back every year? Are Hostas a perennial plant?

With vigorous carefree growth, Hostas are herbaceous perennial plants that will return year after year with little maintenance.

What do you do with Hostas in the fall? What do you do with Hostas in the winter?

Hosta leaves will die back after frost but the crowns and roots remain intact and dormant until next spring. Prune back the leaves once they turn brown in the autumn and remove them from the plant's area. For winter protection, add a layer of compost or mulch over the crowns to protect them from the chill.

Do Hosta attract hummingbirds or pollinators?

Hostas are loved by pollinators and hummingbirds! All walks of beneficial pollinators will show up to sip their nectar.
